Remembering the HRC/Lazio Senate debate in New York in 2000, I
wonder how to handle not only the Biden/Palin debate, but also
I wonder how we should react conversationally with some of our
friends who we attempting to grab a vote for Obama/Biden. I
hear things like, "don't be mean to her", and then I
think, will Putin or Achmadenijad be "nice" to her?
Do equal rights mean that she should have to take the same
belly punches that our male politicians take? I doubt Margaret
Thatcher would demand no more than respectful treatment for
her opponents.
I think if Biden refrains from any silly, sophomoric attitudes
toward women, he should be able to slam her in a true policy
debate. Nothing personal, just a strong job interview. No
stunts, no carrying on about her voice, just treat her as you
would any vice-presidential candidate as long as you remain
respectful. If he is indeed slaughtering her in the debates,
and she is way out of her league, Biden would no doubt help
her find a way not to lose too much face. Remember Admiral
Stockdale?
Just no sexist junk from us. Let them hang themselves, and we
have the winning ticket. Most Americans are NOT evangelicals,
it's just that they show up to vote very reliably. If the rest
of the country voted, we wouldn't believe the amount of change
we would see.
