To me, this is a telltale sign of political spying--and who is doing the spying. No leaks from the McCain camp, "leaks" aplenty from the Dems. Even Caroline Kennedy's curt response to Wolff Bluster about the vetting process after his probing questioning shows that they are spying. As Caroline said, the vetting process is supposed to be secret. But of course, with TIA now implemented, there are no secrets--if you are a RepubliCON.

3. I don't think so. You don't pick a VP at the "last minute". Too risky.
Even if you eliminate the actual pick, they didn't do much to check out the chances of any of the other candidates other than bandy their names about. With Obama, they camped out at the homes of his possible picks. Why is that?

5. They didn't really care about McCain's V.P.
Not much public or press interest...until he picked Palin.

6. They didn't care about McCain's pick but they REALLY cared about Obama's. WHY?
The answer to that question is telling.

7. The press viewed the election as a referendum on Obama
which is what the McCain campaign wanted, but they've lost that now.

To answer your question more directly, I think that it was more of a media competition to get the scoop on Obama. Every network wanted to one-up each other. They also saw it as a challenge to find out before the text messages were sent out. CNN was licking themselves silly, congratulating themselves as the ones who broke the story. There really wasn't enough time to get hyped up about McCain's pick. The media was all focused on Obama's speech. By the time it ended, McCain's campaign was about 12 hours away from announcing their V.P. pick.

8. There wasn't enough time...? Are you serious?
Not only does that sound apologetic on behalf of McCain, it's just not plausible. The make-shit-up media has endless resources to apply when and where they want to apply them for their own purposes.

9. McCain was a boring candidate
Not sure how that is apologetic on behalf of McCain, but it's true.

2. I think they manipulated their own people on this
They may have even given Pawlenty the idea he was the guy to throw everyone off.

4. I think they manipulated us using Pawlenty--another indication of not being a last minute choice
And I still think that little was done by the press to find out who McCain's pick was--while everything was done to spoil the impact of Obama's announcement.
