7. Are you high?
I was talking about wrath visited on the repukes. Like they were praying for to be visited on Denver.

Oh man, the humor-challenged are about.

8. maybe some of us don't find humor in a hurricane bearing down on innocent people
If you're looking for additional chuckles, maybe you could go kick a dog.

We have every Church Leader from across the Land Dissing the Democrats when Nature acts up....calling it
"Our Savior is punishing them for their wicked ways"

Tandalayo_Scheisskopf was just reminding all of us how idiotic people can be... :)

2. and let's hope that if it hits, the government gets it right this time
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 09:36 AM by onenote
I don't give a rat's ass about the politics of this. I care about the people in the path of that storm and I hope that the storm does the least amount of damage possible and that the government does the best job dealing with its aftermath for the sake of those affected.

3. Even if the eye doesn't hit New Orleans, it could still be real trouble
Katrina didn't hit New Orleans directly either. NO was actually on the "weak" side of that hurricane.

If this hurricane passes to the southwest of NO, it could be even worse, because you'd have the northeast quadrant (the worst section) pushing all that water into Lake Poncetrain (sp).

Is there an evacuation plan in place?

9. Supposedly.
At least the government has made mention, albeit cursory, of such in their hurricane warnings and advisories. The trouble is that the NOLA area has a lot of people without personal transportation. Add to that the reality that if history is any teacher, any mass-transit-based evac plan is likely to be inadequate, and you have a "This is REALLY not good" situation.

Because as we all know, the federal government, as presently constituted, tends to consider catastrophic hurricanes as one hell of an effective method of urban renewal.

13. It will be a test for Governor Jindal
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 10:06 AM by merh
I don't want it to hit anywhere and for obvious reasons, I don't want it anywhere near. I am praying (I know, not PC but there it is) that it goes in at some unpopulated area and fizzles out.

But Jindal and the RNC think they could have done better (that is what they want the citizens to believe) but the truth is, before the storm you can't do more than wish the things away and do the best you can with what you have - you can try to get out of the way but that doesn't mean you stop the destruction and the pain, you are just dryer when you have to deal with what is left behind.

The failures of this admin to properly fund the levee system before Katrina have not been corrected today, I betcha Jindal has a horde of folks trying to see what they can do now and I betcha they are in a silent panic mode.

The failures of this admin happened after the storm and are still seen all over NOLA and the MS Gulf Coast, I pray their concerns for the politics of all this makes them do more before, during and after this thing - that they don't fore sake the citizens once again.

16. Jindal is putting together a tentative plan
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 10:00 AM by MountainLaurel
Because at the moment it could hit anywhere in the state: Times-Picayune. State employees have also been getting some in-house e-mails about the storm. As for Orleans Parish, there's the usual contraflow plans and such in place, but nothing has been activated yet and there've been absolutely no comments in the news from Nagin or the city government.

Meanwhile, my supervisor is warning everyone to keep an eye on it and prepare to evacuate. I'm sure the hospital bigwigs are discussing when to put the emergency plan in place.

21. I wouldn't rely on the gov't for much were I there......
It's hard to believe they'd make the same litany of mistakes twice but I sure as shit wouldn't trust that they'll be taking care of me and the people I loved. I was watching the path yesterday and thought shit, if I lived there I'd be moving stuff I cared about to the second floor if I had one and would have the car half packed by now. And I'd be reaching out to someone who needed a lift out of there (I have a VERY small car and 2 dogs.....a person and his/her small animals is about the best I could do). I live in NC and it's freaking me out to watch this path -- I can't imagine living through Katrina and watching the Gustav path now. Every fiber of my being is crossed as I hope it isn't too bad and it doesn't do the same to New Orleans and elsewhere along the coast.

26. Trust me, I'm not going to trust the government
I'm going to be getting my bin of things to go (insurance policies, passport, important papers, pictures and jewelry, dog toys) tonight and keeping an eye on the TV. Flooding isn't a concern in my neighborhood (we're on some of the highest ground in the city) but looters and being without water and electricity in a house where all the windows are painted shit does worry me. Mr. Laurel is being stubborn about wanting to stay, but if I have to borrow his uncle to tie him up and stick him in the car, I may do just that.

29. I'm TOTALLY with you.....
I've been through hurricanes and haven't left, but that's when I was living enough inland that I knew we'd be okay for the most part. Lived in a rural area in CT for Gloria (up on a hill overlooking the CT River) and lost power for 2 weeks. Couldn't get out at all for a few days due to trees in the road, but that was the extent of it. If I lived anywhere along the Gulf coast (or other parts of FL), there's no way I'd be taking a lot of chances. I don't want to see anyone I care about (or any animal I care about) pay the price for me making the decision to stick around when I could have gotten all of us out.

23. Plus, the flooded neighborhoods are still largely abandoned,
bulldozed wastelands. The population is only about 60% of what it was pre-Katrina, IIRC.

The poorest of the poor don't live there anymore, apparently. They haven't come back.

27. Well let's see
Past behaviour (Katrina and the IA floods) tells me that this government won't do a damn thing before or during this storm. They'll be too busy 'partying' and rallying around themselves to notice real people could be or will be suffering and dying. And after the storm they'll act shocked and blame the people for not learning a lesson after katrina.

Fortunately the people of the gulf coast have learned the hardest lessons of katrina and I'll bet they're already preparing for the worst possibilities.

The only upside I can see, if you can call it an upside, is that the infotainment shows will break away often from the rnc to cover death, destruction, and disaster. And we all know how they eat that shit up.

And let the record reflect during this time that once again the repubs will faile miserably at handling another disaster.

Let's just hope for the best y'all but be smart and err on the side of extreme caution... please.
