Timing of the conventions will play into our hands. By the time the
Republican convention rolls around, the viewing public will be "conventioned out." After four days of watching speeches, I don't think the public will want to sit through four more days of basically the same thing.

What do you think?

2. I won't be watching particularly hard.. It will be 4 nights of wanting to kick or punch the t.v.
I think for all practical purposes, I ought to stay away from watching the Repugs... They will lie and look all, predictably, like white, racists old farts. Drives me nutso.. Now, the DNC, I'll be taping most of that.

7. Do some states have laws that say a candidate has to be picked by
a certain day? I remember one state had to change the law to keep bush on their ballot.

lot's of blues and white.. little red.. You have to squint to find their party affiliation.. Its sooo freaking funny.. So, I really wonder how close the numbers are? I think FL is going blue.. we don't have touch screen this year..

Will no doubt try and shove the GOP convention down our throats. It will be non-stop coverage 24 hours a day.

9. think you are off a bit on this
the only people that will really watch the dem or the repub convention are political/news junkies, bloggers, political board posters, and of course those attached to the campaigns

joe and jane american will get their news/info fed to them via glancing at headlines, 6 o'clock news while waiting for the weather or sports scores, and media ads - so as far as being "burned out" by the convention coverage - they probably won't watch it except by accident and quickly change the channel

10. Some will watch it out of curiosity. Wednesday will be Hillary's day.
I think many will tune in to see what she says and does. I think Thursday will be big just out of curiosity too.

13. I think many will try to catch Hillary, Obama, and maybe Biden...
Obama is an event you wouldn't want to miss. Besides the networks have to devote t.v. time to the conventions.. yes, with cable you have many choices.. but its not like a new must see show will be starting.. During the pukes conv. I'll be busy vollunteering my time working for Obama.. keep myself from screaming.

16. I will be listening to Air America. I'm sure they will be having a
good ole time.

I think we should hand out maps to strip bars and brothels for the GOP convention so they have a good time. Post photographers to catch the revelers and post them on the web so they can revisit their celebration.

26. In 2004, they HAD to devote just THREE hours
(which were used as 1) a Bill Clinton speech introduced by HRC, 2) Edwards' speech and 3) Kerry's speech. I haven't heard how much will be carried on the networks this time.

12. I agree with you, but ...
..."After four days of watching speeches" only works if they watch them.

I am sure FOX has some "counter programming" at the ready.

Perhaps to keep the sheep angry and frightened.

18. "after 4 days of watching speeches..."

do you REALLY think that the remote-control wielding general public is going to sit through 4 days of speeches when there are a couple hundred channels WITHOUT speeches...?

the VAST VAST VAST majority have absolutely no interest in watching even a minute of either convention.

Unlike the debates, I suspect that the conventions are more about talking to the base.

28. He was smart enough to beat the best political team in politics today.
What he did was motivate himself to succeed though the cards were stacked against him. He excelled in College and could have settled into a lucrative law practice, but he felt his efforts were better spent helping others pursue their dreams. He got elected to the Illinois Senate where he provided tax relief for families. Worked hard to expand childhood education. He also worked to require videotaping of interrogations to make sure confessions were not coerced. At that time Illinois was coming to the realization that a lot of innocent people were sitting on death row.

In the US senate he's been a strong advocate for us veterans, has push ethics reform, and has fought globalization.

His focus has been constitutional law. He has studied it, and has taught our constitution. He has promised to review Executive Orders and signing statements by bush and will unravel the mess he has made to the balance of power between the branches of government.

An important skill of any president or executive is to inspire, to lead. Obama has shown he can. Look at how he has run his campaign. He shows exceptional organizational skills.

The polls miss several factors: cell phone users (mostly younger voters), enthusiasm, and ground game. bush's ground game was the major factor in winning in many states. Dirty dealings played into his win, but his ground game was superior to Gore and Kerry. This season it is Obama that has the ground game, McCain doesn't. There's a complete change in the party.

In 2000 it took a small group of activist working outside the party to get any campaign off the ground. Now that group of activist has teamed up with Dean and have rebuilt the party from the ground up. this is not the party of the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.

29. That's what the Repigs get for trying to make it as close to 9/11
as possible. Such whores - trying to make a national tragedy an opportunity, like in 04.

Oh, and the unwashed masses (such as myself) will be ready to tune into some football next week. College season will start rolling, and next week the NFL kicks off on Thursday the 4th.

Eat dinner about 6:30 or 7 and then homework/showers, etc. between 7:30 and 9PM. I agree that many will be burnt after watching the Dems.

Question is do the conventions really sway any people?

I think the NFL season starts as McSame will be accepting the nomination. How many people will be watching the wrinkly old white haired dude? I mean, really. We've heard everything he has to say, just watch any Bush speech from the last 7 1/2 years.

32. There shouldn't be any drama at the GOP convention.
If the press ever corners him on any issue, his temper could derail his chances.
