(ch. 9415 on Dish Network). It's a French production with subtitles, and so far done in the style of street interviews and discussions of the players and grievances and goals and such. (TV crews and mikes and such, so don't expect literalism.) Not for everyone. Might be an interesting alternative to the babbling babblers and other circus fare. Runs until 2AM Pacific.

6. Here's the film site --
http://www.frif.com/new2002/la.html

Assuming you don't want the actual theatre-grade film for $398, the home version is $36 or $25 usd at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Commune-Caroline-Esnard-Benoit/dp/B000GYI3JA/

Lots to think about. Who we are, what we want, how, and so on.

3. 1871 - Workers rebelled and attempted to set up a more just society.
The documentary is especially interesting because, by using the interview gimmick, it is able to explore the very many contending and cooperating interests and belief systems at play. Very much like today.

The Paris Commune told in pictures: http://www.katardat.org/marxuniv/2002-COMPARIS/comparis-text/comparis-strip.html

7. The Wiki link is more instructive, but that "in pictures" link

shows how the idea of Power To The People was celebrated in the art of our own country and is a part of our own legacy. There is a pride and exuberance in those images that has been beaten out of many of us.

10. The Paris Commune was the revolutionary event that inspired Lenin.
He danced in the snow the when the Russian revolution survived a day longer than the Commune. The Paris Commune was the first time regular people-- small shop owners, teachers, craftsmen, and the poor--came together to build a new society. They peacefully ruled themselves for a little over two months until they were slaughtered by the National Guard by the tens of thousands.

8. That's a very famous film.
Excellent. Takes commitment, though.

Still watching. There is not one scene in which it seems I am watching some play or film, rather than real people in real situations. That is something really extraordinary. Even when the "1871" characters reflect back on the film they were a part of or make observations like "TV is slavery! ... the entire media is in the hands of 4 groups...." It all is of one naturalistic piece. Amazing.

The whole thing could be used as a text for a semester of history, politics, philosophy, morality, economics or damn near any social science by just taking 10-20 minute segments one after another and asking people to think and talk about what they saw and what it means.

(edit to add another line)
