Overseas DUers... This American wants to get OUT!!!
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 11:25 PM by skypuddle
I'm a 26 year-old graduate student who is currently finishing up her graduate work and wants to go obtain a doctorate.

I wish to continue my studies overseas, as I utterly loathe living in the current pale imitation of the former United States of America.

I would like any and all advice that anyone has to offer with respect to accomplishing this goal.

For informational purposes, I have a conviction for misdemeanor battery, and a misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge some years in my past. I know that these events will present a major stumbling block in my pursuit of leaving this uber-corrupt nation once and for all, but I feel that offering more available information is always a desirable tactic.

EDIT: Typos

2. Yo Hablo Esapa~nol... ( Sorry about the bastardized tilde)
Pero, es una lastima que no tengo el dinero suficente para viajar a un otro pais ahora.

En mi caso, creo que mi curso mejor esta dejar este pais a uno y por todos.

3. Your convictions for misdemeanors will not prevent you from
getting a passport. I applied for mine today at the post office. $100 bucks and $15 for the photos. Now i'm in the waiting stage.

5. A passport I've got...
A student visa to a sane country? Not so much.

That's what I'm after.

6. The three best ways of becoming a resident of another country:
1) Marry someone from that country
2) Have relatives in that country
3) Enter a university of that country

In your case, maybe 3) would be the best way. You could check out schools in Canada, for example, and if you were lucky you could find one that would give you a teaching assistantship that would pay for your tuition and give you a little stipend to boot.

7. Do you know where you want to go?
The best thing I can suggest, is to consider which country you would like to go to and then check the immigration websites of the countries that interest you. You might have to call the embassies/consulates personally to get specific answers to your questions. Here is the Canadian immigration website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp.

If you get grants or other funding, then universities are more likely to accept you. Some grants are transferable to other countries, some are specific to the country in which they are issued. You can probably talk to the financial or student advice department at your university for more info on funding. They may also have brochures from other universities that you can look at. Here is a website listing links to universities/colleges in the UK (http://www.ucas.co.uk/instit/index.html) if that is of any interest to you.

Good luck!
