Poll question: which would you rather see nationwide? pot legalized for age 21+ OR legal drinking age of 18
if you could only choose one or the other(or neither) but not both, which would it be...? marijuana treated pretty much as alcohol already is, OR- pot remains illegal to all, but alcohol is legal for anyone 18 years or older to buy and/or imbibe?

1. This should be a state decision
The US Constitution has no grounds no ban private use of such substances.

3. It's much more important for weed to be legal, both because
of its medicinal properties and because of all the waste of our money and people's lives with its illegality.

When I was 18, the drinking age was 18 and it was great. It made, and still makes, sense. I'd prefer both choices but if I could only have one, I'd go for the weed option. Because IMHO, pot being legal is more necessary.

4. Who would you rather have driving behind you...
An 18 year old drunk driver, or a 21 year old stoned driver. I think the answer is obvious.

7. Neither, thank you. I would rather have a stone cold sober careful driver
behind, infront, beside, or otherwise behind the wheel of any motor vehicle on the road.

5. Why should it be an "either or" situation. I'm not sure about lowering the
drinking age to 18.

But then, it was lowered when I was 18 and while it didn't stop some students from going out and getting drunk every weekend, they did their drinking in bars and pubs, and thus, had a protection against getting so alchohol laden that they became brain damaged or dead...

questionable.

13. Pot and alcohol legal at 18. Not an option in your poll, though.
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 10:53 PM by Selatius
Ideally, I'd like to see alcohol legalized at 16 as it is in most industrialized countries in Europe. Hell, some of them have it as low as 14.

14. pot legal for those over 21
Since alcohol is already legal for anyone over 21, I voted to make pot legal for anyone over 21. After that is done, then we can work on making both legal for anyone over 18.

18. Yes, everything should be 18.
18 is when, in the eyes of the law, a person becomes an adult. They should get all privileges -- drinking, smoking, driving, pot, etc. the day they turn 18 and not a day before.

17. Legalize weed, tax it like Hell
Half the tax proceeds to anti-drug abuse and anti-smoking education. The other half to general revenue.

26. Pot should be legalized but have the same restrictions as cigarettes.
And before you start going on about how smoking is worse for those around them, there are those among us who hate the smell of pot and who don't want to get a contact high.

32. Weed legalized.
I don't smoke weed, but the number of people in jail, on probation, or otherwise negatively affected by weed criminalization is just ridiculous. The drug is demonstrably FAR less harmful than either alcohol or tobacco and has no business being criminalized when those two drugs are legally available.

As far as I can tell, the war on weed is just a scam intended to enrich jailers, lawyers, corporations who exploit prison labor, corporations who fear competition from hemp products, and other grubby little outstretched hands.
