Why do military people all seem to mispronounce "Eye-rack"?

It seems like people who've been there would pronounce it correctly, but I'm listening to yet another military guy on KO, and he pronounces it Eye-rack, too. What's with that?

9. The first letter in Arabic is Ayn, no perfect English equivalent

so it is expected that they will mis-pronounce it. I have been working on Arabic for about 4 years and I still can't come close to pronouncing Ayn consistently correct like a native speaker. Can get close now though.

some West Slavic (if it's accurate that you are part Pole -- though it would be more likely if your Baltic came via Lithuanian ancestry). Every Pole or Slavic person I've ever met -- and every Baltic person, for that matter -- have been vastly bright, so don't worry about that stereotype.

My mom, (Irish parents, from no. NJ) adds it to the end of many words ending with a vowel. (Like pahster - that stuff you have with tomato sauce?). But I've also noticed it being fairly common in the Boston area.
