With all the crying about Obama's campaign, from at least a few Poly sci drop outs who blog, I thought it would nice if those who actually work in campaigns, manage campaigns, have taken political campaign training, speak to these issues that "some" folks have with the shitty Obama campaign.

I'm a '05 Camp Wellstone alumni, I've worked in 7 campaigns since 2004, did my first canvass for McGovern in '72. I recently read a book on Sidney Hillman who immigrated from Russia, started the ACW, which became the AFL, later merged with the CIO. The organizing that Sidney Hillman did in the 20's & 30's is very similar to what I learned at Camp Wellstone, and have seen from the Obama campaign.

This is really an age old formula that has come back into vogue.

1. DFA training
Worked on campaigns since 1960. And I am impressed with the Obama campaign because it is much more well organized than McCain's. There are a few things they could improve on but it is better than Kerry's and even Gore's.

3. I think DFA training came out of the feb '05 NJ Camp Wellstone
WE talked Camp Wellstone into coming to NJ, and 50 of us NJDFA'ers compiled our notes into the 2 day DFA training.

I find similarities with early 1900's union organizing. We got a lot of good things done that way, the NEW Deal is a direct result of that kind of organized grassroots power.

Power to the people !

2. No training but worked from McGovern to Carter. Canvasing, letter
writing, ran headquarters for McGovern and just generally did what I could. I think Obama has a good organization but here in northern MN I am not seeing the signs etc. We have just started a Minnesota Women for Obama group in the MN Democratic Pary. The one thing I think we are having problems with is once again the MSM but we equal that with the internet and feet on the ground.

6. I have always wanted to attend one of the trainings but I think it is
better to keep the openings for younger more able workers. I can follow them and assist in any way they need.

5. Well, I did once.
But you knew that, didn't you, you old coot. ;-)

Now, I avoid local/county involvement. Sorry, but those people be crazy. They don't want me around anyway and hell, I didn't even piss in the potted palms.

7. If you are in a heavily pug area I understand perfectly. I grew up in
NE Iowa and in those days if you wanted anything to say about who your local officials were you had to register pug so you could vote in their primary. The Democratic Party didn't even run candidates for local offices. Thank God things have changed there now. I love it here in MN because you walk down the street and most people think like you do. You can actually talk to other Democrats.
