Greenpeace Activists Deploy Banner and Lock Down Knoxville Office; 7 Arrested.Including Mrs.tekisui!
Edited on Thu Aug-14-08 03:30 PM by tekisui

Today two climbers unfurled a banner at the Kimberly-Clark World Administrative Headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee while additional activists locked down to the front entrance of the building.

This was the latest in a series of actions designed to bring the reality of Kimberly-Clark's ancient forest destruction to the company doorstep.
The international Kleercut campaign wants Kimberly-Clark to stop purchasing pulp from destructive logging operations in the North American Boreal Forest while increasing its use of recycled materials for disposable products like Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle.

“Greenpeace demands that Kimberly-Clark stop wiping away our treasured, ancient forests to make disposable products like tissue and toilet paper,” said Lindsey Allen, Greenpeace forest campaigner. “Greenpeace will continue to directly communicate with Kimberly-Clark employees at events like this until the company stops using endangered forests such as the Boreal to make products that are used once and then thrown away.”

A recent Greenpeace report revealed that Kimberly-Clark devastated Ontario’s Kenogami Forest while promoting itself as a socially responsible environmental leader. The report, “Cut and Run: Kimberly-Clark's Legacy of Environmental Devastation,” uses government information, independent audits, public records, and satellite mapping to document Kimberly-Clark’s management and logging of the Kenogami Forest near Thunder Bay, Ontario. It details how, in just 70 years, the Kenogami Forest has been turned from a vast expanse of healthy, near-pristine forest to a severely damaged landscape rife with social and environmental problems--largely to make products that are used once and then thrown away.

Seven activists have been detained. Photos will be posted as they become available.

3. UPDATE: One of these arrested was my wife!!
Edited on Thu Aug-14-08 03:36 PM by tekisui

There is Mrs. tekisui!

All seven environmental activists arrested this morning during a protest against Kimberly-Clark at the company's administrative center on Summitt Hill Drive downtown have been identified.

Two women and a man who affixed themselves to the company's glass doors with bicycle-type locks will face criminal trespassing charges, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk. He gave their names as Charis Lynn Stone-Racer, 28, of Asheville, N.C.; Emma Cassidy, 23, of Northport, N.Y.; and Kellen Dunlap, 26, of Round Hill, Va.

Four others will face charges of criminal trespassing for hanging a banner from the Summer Place Garage next door, TVA spokesman Gil Francis said. Officials had initially planned to charge them in federal court but later today opted to filed charges in state court, he said.

Francis identified those defendants as: Erica S. Madrid, 28, of Washington, D.C.; Ashley B. Lauth, 24, of Riverwood, Ill.; Scott Cardiff, 31, of Washington, D.C.; and Basil George Tsimoyianis, 22, of Burlington, Vt.

The garage is a federal building used by TVA and Kimberly-Clark employees.

Two women rappelled down the side of the garage and hung a large yellow sign that said, "Kleene," with an "X" formed by a drawing of a chainsaw cutting down a tree and the words "wiping away ancient forests." Beneath that is www.greenpeace.org.

Kleenex is a Kimberly-Clark brand.

The banner covered at least three levels of the garage. Activists said it stretched 30 feet by 20 feet.

6. Greenpeace - The Legend of the Rainbow Warriors
http://www.chiron-communications.com/communique%207-9.html

"The legend of the rainbow warriors and walkers is told many ways and in many different places around the world, including on Turtle Island (North America). It has been glimpsed in vision and told for hundreds of years, from dozens of perspectives.

Among the many ancient versions are the visions and stories of Padmasambhava of Tibet, Eyes of Fire of the Cree, Black Elk and Crazy Horse of the Lakota, Quetzalcoatl of the Toltec, Plenty Coups of the Crow, Ku’Kulkan of the Maya, Monteczuma of the Aztec, the Peacemaker of the Haudenusaunee (Iroquois), and Weetucks of the Wampanoag. Though they lived at different times and in different places, they shared a sense of what would unfold.

"As drawn from historical accounts, the Legend of the Rainbow Warriors relates that when the Earth becomes desperately sick, people of all colors and faiths will unite, and rise to meet the overwhelming challenges with insight, honesty, caring, sharing, and respect."

I imagine she is still in jail. Greenpeace is good about taking care of their activists, and have great lawyers. She is due home tomorrow evening. Hopefully she'll call and check in tonight.

30. Question
was this to encourage more usage of recyled materials or because tp/nose wipe tissue is used only once before discarding? The story is written oddly. I am up on using more recycled paper to remake into personal use paper, but still will use it only once.

So, a kick with an odd question.

31. The action was to get Kimberly-Clark, who makes Kleenex
to use recycled materials, and most importantly to quit the practice of cut and run in the Boreal Forests in Canada. The Boreal's are old growth stands that are clearcut to make one time use tissues, among other things.

That is the ultimate objective, to get the largest tissue producer to halt their destructive practices.

And, the story is written poorly. None of the reporting gives the WHY of the action, unfortunately. Here is a link to Greenpeace's campaign:
