International Youth Day 2008 is Today (Features Ava)

Today is the annual International Youth Day. The purpose of the today is to draw attention to a set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth across the world. Today is also an opportunity for international governments to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. This year’s International Youth Day theme is to increase awareness of climate change and its devastating effects on communities around the world.

River clean-up and tree-planting campaigns have propelled Rocio Garcia, 19, from a slum outside Santo Domingo to the United States to attend International Youth Day on August 12 at the United Nations. She has led her local youth program to restore the river quality and tree population that was stripped during rapid development in her city.

Ava Lowery has been involved in the anti-war movement since she was 14. Lowery has created many animations critical of the Iraq War and President George W. Bush. She has actively demonstrated against the war, while in support of soldiers. Lowery did could not be reached for a comment for this story.
