My Funny incident at the Gas Station (Woman and a Hummer)
Pulled up this morning to the local station to get gas ...On the other side of the pump was a Large (not Fat, just Large) Lady filling up a maroon Hummer (the big one).

As I was filling, I gave the Hummer a Look-see...the Lady looked at me and said "I'll trade you".
(I was driving my truck..a 2005 small Ford Ranger).....

Me: (Smiling)..Ah..thanks but I couldn't afford the fuel.
Lady: Tell me about it...This Monstrosity drinks gas like I drink Chocolate Malts!
Me: Laughing
Lady: This was one of my Husbands Brilliant ideas...the day he brought it home I said "What the Fuck is THAT!!"
Me: Laughing Much!
Lady: ..and something else..I'm sick and tired of people shaking their heads at me and frowning or giving me the finger.
I was thinking of putting a big sign on the side... "My husbands piece of Shit"
Me: Laughing like hell!
Lady:I was gonna' sell this "tin box on wheels" but I doubt if anybody is stupid enough to buy it.
I'll tell you one damn thing..If my husband EVER brings home some Junk Heap like this again, his clothes and stuff is going on the front lawn,,,,maybe Bush or his band of thieves will give him a place to stay.!
Me: Laughing so hard I was almost crying.

She finished fueling...said good-by and started to leave. I said "Nice talking to you ...been a pleasure."
Lady: Have a good one, Sir

She was a very likable person...

1. That is a great story.
It's nice that she had a sense of humor about it.

I am surprised at how many of those pieces of shit I see on the road. I cannot imagine having to put gas in one of those things.

it is a way for chickenhawks to pretend they are in the military without actually getting shot at.

51. Never prouder of my husband than this...
He and our friend Mike were walking by a parallel parked Hummer. Since it's a rare sight in SF, they stopped to looked at it.

Some other guy walked up all breathless, "is that YOURS?"

My wonderful husband smiled a big happy smile, waved and said..

"Nope! Happy with the size of my penis, thanks!"

<sniff!> So proud!

3. I'm sure there are a lot more women out there like that.
Most of the MEN I know drooled the first time they saw the Hummer! My husband,& I, & another couple were roaming through the mall one Saturday a number of years ago, and they had one of those ugly things on display. The 2 guys kept walking around it, oogling it like it was some naked woman. Even as we walked back to our car, they continued to talk about how great it would be to have one! All I can say is "Thank God neither of us could afford one...even back then when gas was $1.00/gal! It's a macho thing!!!

14. There was one on display in a nearby mall a couple of years ago...
I got some 3x5 index cards, wrote "How many miles to the Iraqi does this thing get?" and put them under the wipers and in the side windows. I then stood back and watched. A lot of people came up and read them, but nobody took them off in the hour I watched.

The best reaction was when a boy of about 12 came up and read it. He ran and grabbed his dad and younger sister, pulled them over and showed them the card. Dad read it, laughed and then spent several minutes in a serious conversation with his kids. I was too far away to hear, but it looked like an important lesson got taught.

4. Funny.
I can't believe people would go around giving someone the finger just for what they drive though. That's stupid.

I had an enjoyable stop at the gas station this weekend. I pulled in on my motorcycle across from a large pickup (dual back wheels) where the guy was pumping. I got off, filled up in 1 minute, climbed back on, grinned at the guy who was still pumping away who then mouthed "fuck you" to me.

Put a smile on my face for the next hour.

12. Yep..You bring up a good point. You know...a lot of people assume that just...
...because you're driving a car ...it's yours.

I fix (from time to time) a Women's Geo tracker....and have to drive it to my house to fix things.
It has tons of stickers on it like "Pagans have more fun"..or "Witches are cool" (I happen to agree),,
BUT...I get dirty looks from (some) Men who assume it's mine.
:) :)

53. Ugh, I've had the same assumptions made several times.
In my poor days when we were trying to support a family on the GI bill and what we had saved as a family of three on a private's salary, I used to drive a neighbor's car sometimes when ours wasn't working - which was often. So I'd drive his car to do my shopping and while I was out doing errands, I'd buy cigarettes for another neighbor who didn't have a license at all.

I didn't smoke, the smell makes me sick, and I didn't own the car I was driving, but holy cow there were a lot of judgmental assholes who just know I was defrauding the government by using WIC coupons when I had a decent car, and they knew I needed the coupons because I put a higher priority on "my" smoking than on feeding my child.

This summer, I didn't drive much, but when I did, I had to use the husband's truck because my car was loaned to someone who lost theirs in the midwest floods. So I got dirty looks because I committed the sin of driving a truck without a penis, but it's because the insurance companies took well over a month to cut the check so the guy using my saturn could get a replacement car.

18. I know, people are assholes.
The thing is, a person with a SUV could go home to a solar powered home with ceiling fans.

A person driving a Toyota could go home to a house with the A/C cranked down running 24/7 and using more energy than the SUV driver.

How the person driving the Toyota could feel so confident of the total equation that they feel justified in some way to give someone the finger, is mind boggling to me.

45. or someone could drive a Prius 3 miles a day
... or ride a scooter, or cycle, or walk.

I don't really buy this argument that it's okay to be wasteful if you're only wasting a little, or are wasting less in other areas of your life. Whether your commute is 35 miles or 1 mile, it seems to me that the real question is whether you need to drive a tank. If you live in an area where road conditions necessitate a four wheel drive vehicle to drive safely, then plainly driving a four wheel drive vehicle is a necessity and is not wasteful. If you never drive on anything but perfectly flat asphalt, your legitimate need for a four wheel drive vehicle is less evident and it may well be the case that you really don't need a vehicle which measures its gas mileage in blocks to the gallon and you are being wasteful. Whether you drive wastefully a short distance or a long distance seems to me to be of secondary importance; ultimately, you're being wasteful either way. If I am able to drive a Prius or a scooter or cycle or whatever for my short commute, great, I'm doing better than average, thus helping reduce the overall environmental impact of automobile emissions and fuel consumption, and thus partially offsetting the greater impact of those people who genuinely need vehicles which consume more fuel and produce greater emissions.

Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 02:43 PM by carlyhippy
I have an Xterra, I just bought it, we needed it for the brutal winters with the 4wd and the hauling power to haul a boat, DH is a big person and the bigger vehicle is more for his comfort, and I feel safer driving my kids around, compared to the tiny Escort we had before. I don't have a problem with mine at all, it gets o.k. gas mileage, I have put 20.00 in gas in the past 2 weeks.

54. I drive...
...a shamemobile, like that woman. It's not a Hummer, but it's in the same
deplorable category. I get looks all of the time too.

I have to say that I love my car, but I am embarrassed by it. My guess is that
she probably digs it, but she's sociable and she does feel bad--so she gabs about it.

I bitch about my car too, and make fun of myself for having such a gas guzzler.

I really do feel bad, but I really do like it. Hence the never-ending shame spiral.

...it's just fun to talk to people about stuff like this. And it's also fun to complain
about your husband--especially when you love him so much.

saw many, many huge luxo SUVs for sale - Escalades, Buicks, Navigators, lots and lots of huge and older pickups, but no Hummers. I guess no one even wants to have one on the lot - you could never sell it.
If you bought one, you might be stuck with it.

I live in S.U.V.-Central (in a very conservative part of SoCal in Riverside County). I see quite a few women driving them, and I think that they get stuck with them when the husbands, who bought the monsters, can no longer afford to drive them to work.

I don't bother to flip them off; these women have enough problems.

31. I should add that I see many, many S.U.V.s , particularly Hummers ...
pass by during our weekly peace vigil. The Unitarian-Universalists and the members of the rather liberal local United Church of Christ - well, we co-sponsor the local peace vigil. We "witness for peace," as Rev. Randy puts it. I've taken to holding a sign that says, "End Your Addiction to Oil! The World Will Be A Lot Safer!"

The local Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly decided we needed some oppo; so, they stand across the street. One of their members proudly drives his hummer. He won't even look at us as he drives away. He flipped me off once as I sat in front of my Prius, while holding a sign that said, "Peace Is The Way! We Are One!" I smiled and laughed. By the way, he's a Freeper (literally). Word has it that he can no longer afford to drive that Hummer to work, and he vanpools to work in the next county. HeeHee - poor Freeper!

42. My ex-husband bought a car for his daughter without telling me AND
he put the car (which, to this day, I have never seen) it on my car insurance policy.

I didn't realize that as a spouse on my policy, he could add and subtract cars from the policy without my permission because I had not opted to deny him that privilege. (I didn't know that he could do this and subsequently had it changed.) The premium was going to be $350 per month! The daughter (who he never had legal or physical custody of) was 1.) 18 years old, 2.) didn't get her license until 17 1/2 (so no driving record) and 3.) lives in another county with her mother where they would both be driving the car which would be garaged there. The policy was in my name and the premium was to be automatically added to my monthly bill which he had no intention of paying for. I could not afford the premium and would not pay for it and I removed the car from the policy, called the ex-wife and told her to take the keys away from the daughter and park the car, and told her that they (the parents) must buy a separate policy for the ADULT child (who never lived with me and my ex-husband) and that they must pay for it themselves.

:grr:

I was absolutely livid and we subsequently divorced. (This was the final straw of years of personal and financial misconduct and generally idiotic and irresponsible behavior.)

61. I know! I love my (former) stepdaughter, but I was not going to pay for her car insurance.
New drivers get into wrecks and all sorts of trouble with traffic tickets and speeding. I couldn't afford to be liable for her (and her mom if she drove the car) and possibly loose everything I owned if she were to be in a terrible accident and kill or injure passengers or other drivers and I and/or my insurance company was to be sued.

Thre are policies for teens and young drivers that allow ONLY them to drive the cars. I think her mom got her one of those through Progressive. It also was a policy that you could get if your were not the owner of the car but were the driver of the car. It worked out OK. I'm still friends with my step-daughter's mom. Thank goodness, the daughter has had no accidents so far! She's 20 years old now. (*fingers crossed*) :)

48. Owners of large SUVs have become the "new smokers"!
Once considered "cool", they are now pariahs!

58. I am among those that assume a guy driving one of those oversized cars must have problems
concerning his masculinity.
I don't see too many women driving them around here.
