So Let Me Get This Straight
We are engaged in destroying a third would country after being lied to by our leaders, the Constitution is in tatters at our feet, over 40 million Americans lack any health care at all and the polar ice caps are melting and we are bitching about pizza boxes and advertisements for shoes???!!!

What a sad, pathetic way to spend our energy. No wonder the villians win.

1. It might look like it, but not all of us are distracted like that.
After all, you aren't, right?

of California Pizza Kitchen or D&G: I'm finding alternate modes of transportation, writing my elected representatives and getting my ass out on the streets.

On edit: please notice also that the post was written in a collective voice. Note the use of "we", not "you".

5. Good. So we're not all doing the same thing. That allows us to address all of the issues...
...in a variety of ways.

9. that's the problem
by including pizza boxes and shoe ads as "all of the issues" along with the war, global climate and healthcare, we give them equal weight, waste time and energy and look absolutely ridiculous to anyone outside the fold we may wish to persuade.

17. Who's this "we," Kimosabe?
Most of the "we" here are familiar with this phenomenon after we've been here a while. You can't control what other people want to talk/argue/bitch about on an almost-public online forum unless you own it. If you want people to discuss issues you feel are important, post something interesting and engaging that will attract discussion on the topic. Complaining is most often only ridiculed or ignored.

6. Sometimes it makes life bearable to focus on the little things
and sometimes the little things that are focused on are an underlying current being exposed.

On a similar note of pizza boxes and shoe advertisements (which I admit I haven't clicked on but gather from your OP): Anyone else get a little PO'd with the new AT&T/Cingular commercials that use military aircraft to wow us into seeing the logo? :P

14. Guerneville town square..
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 12:04 PM by Webster Green
From Noon till about 1:15 or 1:30. Some people bring drums to liven it up a bit.

Also, I think the Women In Black still stand in downtown Sebastapol around that time every Friday. They've been doing it for years.

After all, haven't DUers demonstrated an analytical acumen and logical largesse almost unmatched in human history?

how bout you take a count of how many threads fall into the pizza box and shoe ad category and then take a count of legitimate DU threads within the first 3 pages. How bout you do that, then get back to me on whether you still think that's what DU is focusing its energy on ok? :hi:

If you're so interested in other things, please feel free to post about them.

I suppose I could say "We are engaged in destroying a third would country after being lied to by our leaders, the Constitution is in tatters at our feet, over 40 million Americans lack any health care at all and the polar ice caps are melting and" you are posting about what we should argue about?

20. So you think that all people should spend all their energy, 24/7, on the issues
that you deem most critical, or else they are sad, pathetic slackers falling down on the job? Do you really not understand that people are capable of multi-tasking, and working on or caring about more than one topic simulaneously, and that a post on one topic does not demonstrate a lack of engagement with any other topic? Or could it be that you personally have no interest in pizza boxes or shoes, and are simply bad-temperedly lashing out at those who do?

Confession: I watched a hockey game last night - that was two hours when I wasn't out combating global warming, etc. Even worse, it was a replay: I could have looked up the score but I watched the whole thing anyway. How bad of a liberal am I?

23. It's a good strategy, when you think about it
Especially when you combine it with 'I'm going to keep slapping myself in the face until you see things my way' method and the 'I'm going to curse out all my friends because they don't do exactly what I say when I say 100% of the time' tactic.

Just can't lose with these approaches.

Now, I've got to go do some serious penance - I spent 45 seconds on a post in the Lounge, and I'll never get that time back...

:)

26. There's some important shit underlying both the shoe ad and the pizza box
(moreso the shoe ad in my opinion), and some people here aren't getting what the flap is really about. The social and cultural forces that drive advertising are the same ones, way down deep, that drive all the issues you name.

Remember: corporate Amerika wants us to let the "marketplace of ideas" prevail, without any interference from government. As long as the corporations operate all the booths in the market.
