Read quickly, you baker's dozen or so who don't have me on righteous "ignore" for criticizing the Messiah.
There would be no health care plank in the Democratic Party platform this year if it wasn't for John Edwards. The term "predatory lending" would be unheard. Had he been listened to, nuclear energy would be a dead issue, instead of yet another one that Obama will accomodate, along with further restrictions on abortion rights, increased faith-based funding past even what the reactionaries propose, expansion of crimes warranting the death penalty, restriction of workers' rights to sue their employers, refusal to cap credit card interest at 30%, unconditional support for AIPAC, expansion of the STUPID war in Afghanistan, offshore drilling, FISA snooping and who knows what else.
The media, the reactionaries and other partisans did their damnest to destroy this dangerous man, and in the end, he helped them out. If his recounting is true, it was a brief affair two years ago when his wife was in remission and he told her at the time.
Watching people dance on his grave and repeat the snide dismissals of his political record is just another depressing mudfest in a political year filled with hero-worship and self-justified deception. We don't know all the facts about this brief affair, yet we use what we know to villify him to the worst possible interpretation. It's a year of selfish, cocksure skewing of facts and evocation of "rights" to deride certain candidates and support others. Reality will come out, as it has in this instance, and I dread the ultimate outcome.
We deserve the government we get, and we're not going to like the outcome; I hope you all can accept responsibility for it instead of copping to the traditional leftist handwringing of having been betrayed.
Like Hart, this man, with all his great talents, his mind and true heart will be largely wasted. That's nothing to cause rejoicing.
To many of you, I'm just a crank who doesn't like Obama, but to the long time habitues who mostly sit in dismayed silence these days you'll remember me as one of John Edwards' first and most vocal supporters. There are others, and they deserve some toleration in an hour of disappointment. I expect and request none; I'll live by the sword and take my licks.
May others treat you better than you choose to treat them when your heroes fail.
