Gestopo raid mayor's home
Prince George's raid prompts call for probe
Berwyn Heights mayor denounces police tactics

When the shooting stopped, two dogs lay dead. A mayor sat in his boxers, hands bound behind his back. His handcuffed mother-in-law was sprawled on the kitchen floor, lying beside the body of one of the family pets that police had killed before her eyes.

After the raid, Prince George's County police officials who burst into the home of Berwyn Heights' mayor last week seized the same unopened package of marijuana that an undercover officer had delivered an hour earlier.

What police left behind was a house stained with blood and a trail of questions about their conduct. No other evidence of illegal activity was found, and no one was arrested at Mayor Cheye Calvo's home in this small bedroom community near College Park.

1. "This smacks of something from Nazi Germany." Wrong
It's truly horrendous, but it smacks of something from the United States of America, 2008. This is behavior that belongs to our own society. It isn't a projection into our nation from 75 years ago. It's ours and we own it.

In the immortal words of Walt Kelly's Pogo, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

And since cliches are effective memes, let's not forget the one about 'the people end up with the government they deserve.'

2. Prince Georges County, MD is infamous for its nasty nasty police
Prince George's County Maryland has a long history of police misconduct, decades ago, it was white cops abusing black (and white) citizens. The county is now majority African American and the leadership at the County police level is African American, the Chief and Sheriff, whose departments conducted this raid, are African American. Berwyn Heights is a white enclave (71%) in PG county which is 62% African American. The Berwyn Heights Police Department was not notified of the raid.
