He bought her silence by having his heiress-wife pay for her lifetime medical needs..

nuff said...

snip..

It was in 1969 that Carol went to spend the Christmas holiday – her third without McCain – at her parents’ home. After dinner, she left to drop off some presents at a friend’s house. It wasn’t until some hours later that she was discovered, alone and in terrible pain, next to the wreckage of her car. She had been hurled through the windscreen. After her first series of life-saving operations, Carol was told she may never walk again, but when doctors said they would try to get word to McCain about her injuries, she refused, insisting: ‘He’s got enough problems, I don’t want to tell him.’ H. Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, future presidential candidate and advocate of prisoners of war, paid for her medical care.

When McCain – his hair turned prematurely white and his body reduced to little more than a skeleton – was released in March 1973, he told reporters he was overjoyed to see Carol again. But friends say privately he was ‘appalled’ by the change in her appearance. At first, though, he was kind, assuring her: ‘I don’t look so good myself. It’s fine.’ He bought her a bungalow near the sea in Florida and another former PoW helped him to build a railing so she could pull herself over the dunes to the water.‘I thought, of course, we would live happily ever after,’ says Carol. But as a war hero, McCain was moving in ever-more elevated circles. Through Ross Perot, he met Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California. A sympathetic Nancy Reagan took Carol under her wing. But already the McCains’ marriage had begun to fray. ‘John started carousing and running around with women,’ said Robert Timberg.

McCain has acknowledged that he had girlfriends during this time, without going into details. Some friends blame his dissatisfaction with Carol, but others give some credence to her theory of a mid-life crisis. He was also fiercely ambitious, but it was clear he would never become an admiral like his illustrious father and grandfather and his thoughts were turning to politics. In 1979 – while still married to Carol – he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage.

snip...

One old friend of the McCains said: ‘Carol always insists she is not bitter, but I think that’s a defence mechanism. She also feels deeply in his debt because in return for her agreement to a divorce, he promised to pay for her medical care for the rest of her life.’ Carol remained resolutely loyal as McCain’s political star rose. She says she agreed to talk to The Mail on Sunday only because she wanted to publicise her support for the man who abandoned her.

Indeed, the old Mercedes that she uses to run errands displays both a disabled badge and a sticker encouraging people to vote for her ex-husband. ‘He’s a good guy,’ she assured us. ‘We are still good friends. He is the best man for president.’ But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics. ‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said. ‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’

1. Sounds like Ross Perot doesn't care much for John McCain!

3. And the most scurrilous shit gets talked about 24-7 about Obama, but NOTHING about this
Edited on Fri Aug-08-08 01:12 AM by SoCalDem
They cannot say it does not matter because it happened so long ago.. They ARE gleefully going back to when Obama was a little boy, so surely THIS matters too..

It goes to the core of the person McCain is.. It shows his character..

If he so casually FLIP-FLOPS and dumps his wife so he could hook up with a rich young chickie..and get her daddy to buy him a congressional seat..

4. They don't talk about anything about McCain.
Not even on msnbc. Only a few remarks about his campaign speeches.

The Dems should be ripping him to shreds. Yeah, Kerry was great today, but that is only a start.

Why are we always so nice?

and it's an integral part of who Mccain IS...

8. What does his abandoning a wife to go chasing after Big Money...
...have to do with how he's performed as a senator, or how he'd behave as president?

11. Exactly. It's like the Edwards affair story.
Irrelevant to the discussion. Who someone is screwing is not important. What they'll do for the country is important.

Few politicians are saints. All I care about is what kind of president they'll be.

so why should Mccain's past be exempt.

15. Disagree
JFK screwed anything in a skirt. What does that say about his character? Was he a bad president?

Politicians are typically egotistical assholes. In fact, every president we've ever had besides Carter probably had affairs.

Enough with the concern and focus on tabloid crap. All I care about is what they'll do in office. What kind of husband they are is irrelevant.

16. I think what irks me and other progressives is not that he was a philanderer
as much as he is such an opportunist and hypocrite. I voted for Clinton despite his infidelities since I feel, as you do, that it's his national leadership qualities, not his personal life per se, that matters. AND, while Big Dawg was and equal opportunity philanderer, McCain was coldly plotting his way to fame and fortune in going after Cindy. The fact that his wife was disabled just adds insult to injury. Something is very wrong with this man's moral compass -- and I am not talking about his sex life...

20. It doesn't bother me, just because I'm a cynic about ALL politicans.
To me they are a bunch of egotistical, conniving, greedy, plotting, untrustworthy pack of hyenas.

The trick is to pick the one which will actually do some good while he gets his ego stroked, pocket lined, and career enhanced.

I'm a firm believer in the Douglas Adams quote:

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem

21. That is a liberal viewpoint
The amazing thing is the conservatives, to whom these things matter greatly. They should be ashamed to put McAdulterer up as their nominee, given their own standards.

22. My question was rhetorical.
I think his ditching of his first wife for a huge pile of cash is emblematic of what happened to every one of his other alleged values. It is not in itself a reason not to vote for him, but the same stink is on the million-and-three good reasons.

9. Leave it to Perot to be blunt and to the point.
McCain is just getting smacked around from all sides. Except the MSM..... they apparently keep missing anything to do with McCains lack of character.

As if a sailor and pow cannot also be an asshole.

19. Yes, and she is *very* scary looking.
I try not to judge people on looks, but combine that predatory expression (she reminds me of the Siamese cats in _Lady and the Tramp_) with the fact that she married McCain....

I saw her on the cover of _Time_ in the vet's office, and I had to throw another magazine on top of it.

I've done that many times over the past 7 years-- usually
when it's junior or one of his thugs on the cover. :puke:

And McCain looks like the Michelin tire guy!

Is there more than Cindy, +/- Vickie? Interested minds want to know. The door is open.

29. Between his return and Cindy, he was a "ladies' man"
Apparently, he parked her and the kids in Florida, and later Virginia, and then played the field until he found out just how RICH, Miss Rodeo Queen really was.. It was not long after that, when he junked his wife & kids for her.. With HER (and her Daddy's) money he could BUY a congressional seat..which is exactly what her old man did.. He "shopped" for a district for his new son in law, and then set them up in that place so he could win the election..

John's been having people "fix things" for him forever..First as an admiral's son/grandson, and then as a war hero and son in law to a millionaire.. Remind you of anyone??
