Kadie's thread got me to thinking - I used to really hate Poppy Bush
I thought he was an out-of-touch, don't-give-a-fuck real piece of work.

Look at him and his idiot offspring: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3749501

Whatever my feelings for Poppy, I have to give him his due.

He does have bearing.

He does try to be pleasant.

He demonstrates intelligence.

He can enunciate.

Chimpy has none of that.

None.

Zip.

Nada.

I think Poppy was raised by classier parents. And there's not much class in that family.

8. well, I said not 100% - I'm setting the bar low. nt

2. Well, compared to the clone he does come off as a superior specimen
but really CW, he still is the evil that spawned more evil and remember how classy he was when he threw up all over the Japanese PM back when he was President?

3. It's a sad, sad state of affairs...
...when things have slipped so far that we start to think of Poppy as "OK."

Next, we'll be saying: "Hey, at least Nixon got us out of Vietnam."

14. Much to my chagrin, I have found myself singing Nixon's praises more than once
in the past few years. In 1971 or 1973 I would never have believed myself capable of that.

17. As long as we all understand that...
...the old criminals weren't any better than we thought they were, it's just that the new ones are much much worse.

Sort of like the through-the-looking-glass equivalent of Isaac Newton's "if I see further than others, it's because I stand on the shoulders of giants". Today's corollary should be, "if I'm an unbelievable scumbag, it's because I had good role models."

15. John Dean did say something last week on a program that
during Watergate no one was tortured or imprisoned without charges or rights to counsel. So in a way tricky Dick was better than this clown.

20. Hopefully we will never say "well at least * never..."
:scared:

That would be a sad sad day.

4. It is possible to look at him and say "this guy could be the president"
It is definitely NOT possible to do that with the chimp.

However the slack I'm willing to cut for daddy boosh does not extend to his choice of a mate.

GAK. What was he thinking?

12. Babs was actually cute when she was young...
before she had kids....I'm sure Poppy Bush didn't know at the time that her inner ugliness would manifest itself on the outside eventually.

6. Poppy was raised by a bunch of nazi appeasers
Regardless of how well spoken he may be. His luxurious life was largely funded on the backs of Nazi labor.

13. Poppy is a not a complete waste of skin
Rich boy runs off to the war in the Pacific and holds a job that killed over 90% of his peers. If nothing else, Poppy had some true physical courage at one point. He could have really been somebody, a real mensch.

18. it has been noted before
for as much flac as he gets, GHWB was at least an articulate person. He was at least not an absolute disgrace to all of us. I think Reagan was a bigger embarassment to us than Bush I.

I think the hierarchy of recent embarassment would have to go
Bush I
Nixon
Reagan
Bush II
Ford

19. He's a piece 'o shit!
Maybe not as bad as his evil offspring, but he's a war-criminal and traitor himself.

I believe he was involved in JFK's assassination, sabotaged Carter's Iran hostage mission, arranged for Iran to hold the hostages till Reagan's inaugural, and much more.
