Michele Bachmann: Democrats want Americans to live in tenements and take light rail to work
 as hell!

from the American Family Association's (also  as hell) OneNewsNow:

An urban America -- the Democrats' vision?
Jim Brown - OneNewsNow - 8/6/2008 7:10:00 AM

A Minnesota congresswoman says the United States is the only country that has made it illegal to access its own energy.

House Republicans are continuing their revolt against Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her decision to adjourn the House without a vote on offshore oil drilling to lower gas prices. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich plans to join House Republicans in the Capitol this morning to join the protest.

Representative Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) says it has not escaped Democrats what the cost of gasoline and loss of jobs are doing to the country.

"This is their agenda," Bachmann states bluntly. "I know it is hard to believe, it's hard to fathom -- but this is 'mission accomplished' for them," she asserts. "They want Americans to take transit and move to the inner cities. They want Americans to move to the urban core, live in tenements, (and) take light rail to their government jobs. That's their vision for America."

Bachmann predicts gasoline will rise above $5 a gallon if Barack Obama is elected president.

10. I think so
if the Democrats can come up with a decent opponent for this hag and continue to harp on her attachment to the RW nutjob fundie movement I think she can be removed.

I don't know offhand who the dems are running but I really hope they find someone that has no problem going after her fundie roots.

20. The DFL is running El Tinklenberg against Bachmann
http://www.tinklenberg08.com/

"..Tinklenberg quickly gained a reputation as an expert in the field of transportation, eventually serving as Governor Jesse Ventura's Commissioner of Transportation from 1999 to 2002. Charged with managing the day-to-day operations of the department's 5,500 employees and $2 billion annual budget, he worked directly with the legislature to secure funding for the state's first light rail, the development of a regional commuter plan, and a (short-term) doubling of the state transportation budget. In 2003 he served on the Board of Directors for the American Public Transportation Association."

4. Well I object to the tenements aspect
But what exactly is wrong about living more densely in urban cores and taking mass transit?

15. Nothing, as long as you're not a farmer or processing toxic waste.
Except everyone knows that all cities are wall-to-wall tenements crawling with roaches, rats, drug dealers, gang members, muggers, murders, rapists, welfare queens (and their illegitimate broods of a dozen or so kids each), brown and other poor people. :yoiks:

I live in the city and, just the other day, I was mildly annoyed when someone drove by with the music turned up too loud. It's HELL!!!

17. We live in the city too
We had one of my wife's friends come visit us from another city as she passed through from point A to point B. She lives in the suburbs of her city and by her own admission never goes into her own city's urban areas.

She was literally afraid and couldn't wait to get back on the highway. We were kind of insulted by it. We live in the city but it's a nice clean neighborhood where people take good care of their homes. They're just packed densely together. We even have lots of trees, deer and wild turkeys here and there (and occasionally a peacock that escapes from the zoo nearby).

And you CAN be a farmer and live in the city. There's one near here that's smack in the city.

I guess anything that threatens the american way of living in prefabricated suburban sprawl and driving 30+ minutes each way to work and back in your SUV is BAD....it's BAD.

5. Republicans want to build tenements...
and charge mansion prices for them. (A tenement in NYC is a specific kind of walk-up which isn't built anymore). And since when does oil in America belong to the American people?

7. She's half-right...
The "hard to believe, hard to fathom" half.

The rest of it is scripted by Gingrich. It's classic "say ANYTHING that'll get people riled up and stampeding in a particular direction, say ANYTHING to push an agenda, facts are irrelevant" Newtism.

11. Finally a Repug comes out in favor
of nationalizing oil!

Take the oil away from the oil companies!
It is under American land and boundary waters.

Dedicate it to farmers, feedstocks, and rail.
Nationalize railroad and exchange track usage credits to the current rail lines. Let railroads use the rail like trucks currently use the highway.

And yeah, residence density has to go up, America must re-urbanize.
Not because Democrats want it, but because the alternative looks a lot like KunstlerLand.

The Republicans want America to be a land of starving, ill people who will become part of generation kill... or die, and make way for those who will.

14. Well...there are some here on DU suggesting similar actions
Not too many, but some self righteous people have claimed we should not live rurally,
drive very far (if at all) and move to the city and save the countryside for the animals and rail visits.

18. Suburban sprawl is a thing of the past..
cheap oil is a thing of the past. It's not a sustainable lifestyle anymore. I don't think any sane rational Democratic person posting here proposes forcibly moving people out of the country though.

19. Yeah, I've noticed that..
My shop where I make my living is in my suburban basement, it keeps my business overhead down to the point I can actually make a profit as a self employed single individual.

If I lived in an urban situation, that would not be possible for me to do, I'd have to go to work for someone else or rent commercial space that would take the great majority of my gross income.

The line runs from the Mall of America (in Bloomington) to the warehouse district in Minneapolis and is being extended to run by the new stadium.

after they've lost their homes, depend on high-dollar gasoline to keep them moving...and arrest them for trespassing when they eventually run out of gas along with every dime to their name.
