Fred Thompson might run for president
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 08:56 PM by madville
I think this could be bad for Democrats. The guy has star power, is tall, and has a very strong voice and look that will be good in debates. Every Republican I have run across is unimpressed with Rudy and McCain, I think this could be trouble in a Reagan kind of way.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,257858,00.html

"WASHINGTON — Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is facing increased calls to get into the 2008 GOP nomination race.

Sources told FOX News that Thompson, 62, now one of the stars of the popular NBC prime time series "Law & Order," has not ruled out a presidential bid, and has authorized advisers and supporters to continue to gauge support.

Advisers are holding regular strategy sessions, investigating fundraising avenues and private polling to measure enthusiasm. Perhaps pre-eminent among a number of prominent Thompson backers working behind the scenes is former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker.

Baker has been a mentor to Thompson since before the Senate's Watergate hearings, for which Baker hired Thompson as majority counsel and for which Thompson earned fame for having Baker ask the key question that led to President Richard Nixon's downfall: "What did the president know and when did he know it?"

Baker ran for president himself in 1980. Thompson eyed the White House in the 1990s.

Thompson's wife, Jeri, very much supports a run, sources said. While Thompson, who also helped raise money and advise I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's legal defense fund, continues to mull a bid, sources said he has been inundated with calls from GOP donors and supporters urging him to run."

6. The right is angry because they don't have that choice right now
He could energize their base. Plus he has a recognizable face and as an actor can make the majority of America that votes like him just because he is a tough guy in movies and on TV. People like tough guys, Bush has been a wimp and a strong faction already are negative about Hillary, might be trouble.

17. But with gravitas.
And his character on Law and Order is so appealing. So stern, yet fair and just.

20. I agree that he will use his character on the show to further himself.
I am not yet convinced that it will do him any good in a campaign.

4. We've already had a bad actor as president once....
and he laid the groundwork for the mess that we find ourselves in today.....
Besides, aside from Law & Order devotees and serious fans of Die Hard II, I don't really think anybody knows who the hell he is. His star power is rather dim.

7. Law & Order is one of the most popular shows ever
It has been on longer and in syndication more than almost any other show in the history of television. I think that helps them in many ways.

of their party.

He is also one of McCain's closest friends.

12. When McCain ran in 2000
Thompson campaigned with him everywhere.

And McCain said if elected, Thompson would be his Attorney General.

24. not to mention his probable involvement in the 2000 election
dirty deeds. I am pretty sure one of his top aids was in the "angry mob" banging on the doors in Florida when the recount was attempted. Wonder who dispatched that aid there? And how exactly did other election irregularities in Tennessee (later studied by the DOJ for prosecution) enable Bush* to usurp the State of Tennessee from Al Gore by a mere 70,000 votes?

The incidents of African-American voters who "registered" at the motor vehicle department only to show up to vote with no registration on record, the African-Americans voters standing in long lines told to go to the end of the line by poll workers, the sudden, unexplained movement of poll locations at the last moment, the two-few voting machines in heavily populated Democratic areas ... all are a matter of public record. Tennessee was a min-Florida - it just didn't receive the same publicity.

But, of course, Thompson had no direct involvement in that....

Oops, I forgot to move on and get over it.

22. Family Values
On June 29, 2002, Thompson married Jeri Kehn, a political media consultant at the Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, and McPherson law firm in Washington, D.C. She once worked for the Senate Republican Conference and the Republican National Committee. In October 2003, they had a daughter, Hayden Victoria Thompson. He also has three grown children, one of whom is deceased, from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren.
Self-described friend of I. Lewis ("Scooter") Libby, Jr, he has lent moral and financial support to Libby while on trial for his role in the Plame affair<4>, serving on the advisory board of Libby's defense fund that has taken in 3.5 million USD as of February 9, 2007.<5>

first Mrs. Thompson? Is he another of the GOP family values crowd who dumped his wife for a younger woman? Like McCain and Reagan? Or did he dump TWO previous wives, like Bob Barr and Newt Gingrich?

16. Not the best timing in the world
While Thompson, who also helped raise money and advise I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's legal defense fund, continues to mull a bid,

I wonder if even the repukes have the chutzpah to run him given that. What an opportunity for the Dem nominee to basically run against Scooter (and by extension, Cheney and Rove)!
