And it all started with I thread about an Army Captains letter saying in a chain email that Obama did not thank the troops enough. And that put me into my, where are we now, and how did we get there, thinking and has now made me feel the need to rant and likely some of you might find this offensive, so please forgive me in advance…and if I do I promise to say 10 hail Mary’s and do a good act of contrition,
So where are we now with the military;? All of the soldiers are volunteers and many of them are weekend soldiers that were called up much to there surprise. And th volunteers are there because many of them just like the action. And for even some of them are people who dream about spattering someone’s brains and blood all over the palace….Rat-a-tat-tat, splat splat splat…boy is this fun when you do it fore real and not on a computer….And so we accept the notion that if you want to kill a bunch of people who look like civilians but are the terrorist enemy of America, then give the job to someone who likes what they do. And we must thank them for there service, and refer to them as heroes who have given us our freedom.
Now look back to when we last won a war against a few mad men across the water. There were many volunteers in WW2 but what motivated them was when there president whom they respected asked them to sacrifice and help end the madness that was taking place in the world, and that madness had a very good chance of destroying this country and they saw it as there duty to protect there sisters and mothers and family, and so they volunteered. But many were also drafted and did not want to go kill anyone but they too saw it as their duty, and most preformed well and some of them did heroic deeds, like Sergeant York in the first war, and Audi Murphy in the second. But you never heard them tell it because they had been brought up to believe that murdering another m was abhorrent and they were not proud of that. But they did it as their duty, and there was no need to thank someone for doing their duty.
My own father was a Marine in WW1 and was wounded at the battle of Bellue Woods. But I never heard a war story from him and neither did any of my brothers sister. What I did learn from it came from my mother,,, he never spoke of it himself and I am almost sure he had some tails to tell. Perhaps it was because in his generation that was considered to be a disgraceful thing to brag about. But also perhaps he was not proud of it, he just did it because of a sense of duty, that now seems silly to us in this world where we don’t feel we have any duty to anyone but ourselves. Protect your family? They don’t need your protection, that is what we pay the police and the soldiers for, besides, they are living well in sun city a thousand miles away, and your sister married an internet guru and needs nothing from you. It seems that we have outsourced our responsibilities and privatized all sense of duty to our families and country. And this is what we get.
A military that is used as a political tool A military that must be constantly praised for there service and called heros of freedom. A military that is trained by video games to kill brutally, with no sense of remorse or compassion…. anyone that wears a rag on their head and has brown skin if fair game in this war on terror. .Blow them to pieces if you want to win this new kind of war and be proud of it, because god is on our side and when they are all dead we will all be free.
Am I the only one that sees the folly in this thinking?. Does anyone else see that we are rewarding evil by normalizing violence?
