We got this note about safety in Afghanistan (or lack thereof) from our top Kabul staffer: "Travelling any where in Afghanistan is not safe these days. Even places where we went in the past, such as Maidan Wardak, which is 20 miles from Kabul, are not safe. There are many threats from insurgents and of course kidnappers who are always looking for soft targets, such as people working for the media and Non Governmental Organizations. The road to Jalalabad was among the safest roads in the past, but now there are daily clashes between Taliban and police there. From time to time, members of the Taliban set up check points, looking to kidnap people working with the government and foreign agencies, Afghan staff included."
