Tom Cruise has been named in a $250million lawsuit against the Church of Scientology

Former Scientologist Peter Letterese filed legal papers in Florida on July 15 alleging that members of the church harassed him after he left, reports the New York Daily News.

Letterese wants the church, which he calls a 'crime syndicate', broken up under America's RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization) law which has been used by federal authorities to tackle Mafia families.

He alleges Cruise, an open Scientologist, promotes the church using his celebrity.

The lawsuit says Scientology head David Miscavage is 'aided and abetted by the actions of Tom Cruise, his right-hand man for foreign and domestic promotion, as well as for foreign and domestic lobbying.

27. Well, I suppose it depends on how you look at it...
Westboro Baptist Church is more hateful, no doubt about it, but Scientology has destroyed tens of thousands of lives.

Either way, fuck both bunches of religious nutjobs!

sad to see so many naive individuals fall for racketeering organizations that front as religions.

I'm sure Tom isn't the only Hollywood star taking money to proselytize for them.

40. alll religions that ask people for money are scams.
Little old ladies give up everything for televangelists because we all know that god needs money.
Scientology is no more or less a cult than any other "religion". They are ALL cults.
Live for today as there is no "second" chance waiting for you at the end. When you die you are simply gone.

10. This Is A Strange Situation...
Scientology is obviously a racket, no doubt about that. But I don't think Tom Cruise thinks it's a racket. I think he's completely brainwashed and he really BELIEVES in that nonsense. Like most religious extremists, he is probably appalled that anyone could ever think that what he is doing is wrong since he's only trying to *help* people. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 01:57 PM by Warpy
who is as much of a brainwashed victim as Letterese once was, is simply to make the case high profile enough to offer him some protection.

This is one religious scam that needs to be beggared out of existence, if only because they're practicing psychiatry without being licensed and do so at prices that would make a Park Avenue charlatan blush.

It really is an interstate racket.

37. Oh, sorry. "All hail, his majesty, And he shall reign for ever and ever."
:puke:
Tom's weakness is that he only takes macho hero roles. He won't branch out and play any other character. If it doesn't pump up his image as the caped crusader, he won't take it.

I'm glad Nicole Kidman left him. She's a sweetheart. She deserves alot better.

30. Good for Letterese. I hate Scientology with a passion
My wife and I read "A Piece of Blue Sky" and decided to get involved in an online community - back in 1995.

This is a criminal organization that has NOTHING to do with spirituality.

They prey on the poor and middle class and actively court celebrities for credibility.

Tom Cruise is one of those gullible idiots who fell for all their charms.

and he was getting literature from the Scientology people back in the fifties. They were trying their best to recruit him into their religion/cult. He would have nothing to do with them, thought hubbard was a crack pot and a crook. Several members even came to our house one day and he let them in, then after a few minutes asked them to leave and never come back. He said that he just wanted to hear what they had to say, but had then decided that he wasn't interested in what they were selling and we were not to let them back into the house. I don't think they did come back after that. If they did, they were not allowed to enter.

Let all the filth out in public and let everyone make up their own minds.

Maybe now we know why the cult has been advertising so much lately; they're trying to taint the jury pool.
