Speculators Trying to Buy Control of Food Supply
According to the New York Times, Financial Times, and others, hedge funds and other investors are buying up farms, farmland, fertilizer, grain elevators, shipping equipment and other necessities for producing food.

Given the meltdown in the housing and financial sectors and the weakness in the U.S. economy, large investors figure that everyone has to eat, and so investing in food production is a sure thing.

That means that speculators will drive up food prices.

As Jim Hightower puts it:

“By ‘owning structure,’ they mean centralizing control of food in the hands of financial manipulators who have only one crop in mind: fat profits.

4. This Has Been Going On For A While
Back in the late 80's, I lived in Iowa and the "corporate farm" had already become a big concern. Many of these farms were bought for pennies on the dollar during the farm mortgage mess of the 80s (anyone remember Farm Aid?) and then pushed the many other family farms to sell or join a co-op they controlled.

Fast forward to the current financial mess and the speculators have been one step ahead of both the "regulators" and the corporate media. Many made big bucks in real estate and when that began to collapse, they headed into the oil/energy markets...and voila, $4 gas...now that game is both over-heated and getting too much scrutiny, so it's on to the next big thing...one that all their antics was sure to affect...food.

Be prepared...this fall and winter will be very rough...food and heating prices will soar as one final killing is made before this regime and it's "laise-faire" approach to any type of oversight and regulation vanishes.
