How Orwellian...
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 01:42 PM by Texas Explorer
I don't know about you guys, but this disturbs me. It is reminesant of George Orwell's 1984, to wit:

Another way in which the Party managed to infiltrate Winston s personal life was when Mr. Charrington, a member of the thought police that was disguised as an old prole shopkeeper, betrayed Winston by allowing him to use his upper room to sleep with Julia, and then revealing himself as one of the thought police. The way the Party was able to spy on and find out that Winston was a conspirator was one of the things that led to Winston s self-betrayal. The Party also rooted out conspirators by corrupting the minds of the young. Children grow up with whatever principles their environment holds, and the Party uses this fact to their advantage by creating youth groups like the Spies, which teach children to spy on those who are close to them, like friends, family, and even parents. Children are taught to worship the party and Big Brother, and they are motivated by the prospect of honorable mention and congratulations from the Party. One example of the power the Party gains by cultivating the loyalty of children is the imprisonment of Parsons. Parsons was a friend of Winston s whose daughter caught screaming Down with Big Brother! in his sleep. He was even glad that his daughter stopped him and turned him in and claimed that he would thank the Party for saving him. When Winston asked who ratted him out, he said It was my little daughter with a sort of doleful pride. I don t bear her any grudge for it. In fact, I m proud of her. (P. 233) His daughter s betraying actions probably resulted in her own father s execution, simply because he denounced Big Brother while he was talking in his sleep. This is a perfect example of the influence that the Party holds over children, and how brainwashed adults are, being that Parsons was proud that his daughter betrayed him.

Granted, this is a British power company and Britain is where the Orwellian cameras and telecreens are a part of the landscape. But we are following very closely in their footsteps.

Climate cops? Indoctrination? Ingenious conservation program? Big Brother?

1. So, does that also make McGruff the crime dog Orwellian?
Are you saying that, in fact, any and all attempts to instill children with sound values about the environment or what have you is just Big Brother wearing a happy mask?

2. Hell, I don't know. That's why I'm asking. With everything else
Orwellian we've seen lately, who the heck knows how low that would go. Perhaps I just need to pull my tin foil hat down a little tighter today.
