Baggage System Snafu Delays American Airlines Flights From JFK

NEW YORK -- American Airlines said its baggage system at John F. Kennedy International Airport is not functioning – forcing security officials to manually screen bags.

A spokesman for the airline, Tim Wagner, said a conveyor belt in the bag room is not working properly. About 20 flights have been delayed by an hour to an hour and a half, Wagner said.

Other flights have taken off without baggage.

At the airport, huge lines were formed at the check-in kiosks and scores of bags are piled up.

Meantime, the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, is sorting bags manually.

The airline is announcing the issue to passengers and those who don’t want to fly without their luggage can wait for another flight.

American said that once the issue is resolved, the bags that are left behind will be sent on their way to the customer's destination and delivered to him or her.

There are folks at TSA and DHS who'll take that as a challenge...

3. Luggage is hand searched in Mexico.

It is not a big deal. You simply give the handlers your bags and they search it thoroughly. I actually prefer it, to be honest, if the goal is security.

But I swear I don't think that's the goal with the TSA. Aggravation sounds more like it.
