Rowing and Kayaking
If someone is not trying to compete in rowing and kayaking do they need any special training? Both seem to be very easy to perform. In addition, if someone is not planning to do any whitewater kayaking, just river and calm waters does that person need any training.

1. iverit's certainly good to get a some pointers before setting out on a river-
no matter how calm you believe it to be. Kayaking is really easy and you can pick it up quickly. And it's awfully fun. Purchasing my kayak several years ago, is something I'm completely glad I did.

2. Short answer Yes!
What that training may be will vary depending upon intended use and experience level.

You could probably paddle around a small pond for a couple hours without getting into too much trouble. But if you plan to make a habbit of it, I would think a basic Paddlecraft safety course for starters. Its a good opportunity to find out how much you don't know about the sport. Depending upon your interest level after having some basic paddlecraft/boater safety course you could proceed with some of the classes offered by the American Canoe Assoc. or British Canoe Union who are the real experts in Paddlecraft.

3. a lesson is well worth it, even if you don't plan on whitewater
you'll learn some very basic things like how to paddle that will let you avoid things like sore arms and limited endurance.
It will make your trips much more enjoyable.

4. I started last year
and am a 56 year old grandma, solo kayaker. I took a three hour class. Then I watched a bunch of videos first, read a couple books. Bought my Kayak and the rack to load it on the car. Rented a cabin on a lake by myself for a weekend so I could learn without making a fool of myself, and just did it. No, I don't do the eskimo roll, just gentle paddling, but am VERY safety oriented. Excellent life vest, paddle floats, etc.
I even saw a moose on the shore who did not see or hear me, and got pretty close to it. Have fun!
