Conservatives go bonkers over "esprit decor" if gays are let into the military
John Aravosis (DC) · 7/24/2008 11:42:00 AM ET

Absolutely hilarious hearing yesterday in the House about the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy that kind of sort of bans gays from serving in the US military. Dana Milbank's coverage is a must-read. Here are some highlights:

Donnelly was followed by Jones, a tough-talking businessman who suggested that the military's tradition of "selfless service" would be undermined by gay men and lesbians. "In the military environment, team cohesion, morale and esprit de corps is a matter of life and death," he said. His written statement spelled it "esprit decor"; it also warned of "a band of lesbians that harassed new females," and noted his own military experience when "the only way to keep from freezing at night was to get as close as possible for body heat -- which means skin to skin."

1. It's as if the military didn't already have plenty of gay people already.

6. Same here
I was in the 82nd ABN in 80-84.

We had two of the most effective NCOs who were a lesbian couple.

...and I got invited over for dinner and a shower, so I guess they were bi lol.

9. This was back in the sixties, a much less enlightened time. the
first black soldier was serving his first tour of duty at our post. For some reason they didn't want to send African Americans to a post in Africa. It could have also had something to do with the mission, but it was racism pure and simple. The orientation was very racist. I guess that is why the two African Americans that came with our group had "special duty" at that time.

Why don't they just keep their clothes on?

5. Funny, isn't it, how the vast majority of people speaking against DADT...
Have neither military experience nor accreditation in human sexuality.

Those people who do have military experience or accreditation want DADT to be eliminated.

7. esprit "decor"

moron (not the OP). It's French. It's not "decor". It's "des corps".

If you're gong to use the term, at least look it up.

8. But *everyone* know that esprit is just tacky!
I was looking to buy a house and the decor was in the esprit style. It was horrible! I ran away from there!

13. But... but... if it's about gays then it's about "decor" ... after all, they have better taste.

10. But if they let gays in the military
Conservatives can no longer get boners when speaking of "our boys in uniform".

You barbarians have no idea of the fine traditions you are destroying.

12. "the only way to keep from freezing at night was to get as close as possible for body heat..."
"...which means skin to skin."

OK, I was in the military a long time, and spent time in places like Alaska, Colorado and Northern Europe, and I have *NEVER* heard of this practice.

Wasn't this guy issued mukluks (sp?), an M-65 parka, and an itchy green blanket with a big "U.S." stamp on it?

That's for the cold weather.

15. Maybe they should have an openly gay unit.
Let the other troops get used to the idea for a while.
I'm sensing a Fox reality TV show here. The Rainbow Brigade.
