What we need to do to get President Obama
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 12:01 AM by bluevoter4life
I know I am preaching the choir here on DU, but I don't think we can say it enough. Here are some things we, as progressives, need to do to get Barack Obama in the White House.

1) First and foremost, we need to get people registered to vote. There are still too many people who are eligible who are not registered. WE need to get these people showing up to the polls in record numbers. The availability of absentee ballots and early voting in some states must be mentioned.

2) Donate, donate, donate

3) Become proactive. It is one thing to say you support Obama. It is something COMPLETELY different actually going and and phone-banking, knocking on doors, and handing out fliers in front of the library.

4) Ignore the fact that he is black. Look past his race and look deep into his ideals and values. As the party of progressives, we obligate ourselves with the task of throwing away preconceived notions and stereotypes. We cannot let the ignorance of a few affect the choices of many.

5) Get Involved. Go to rallies where he, or his campaign is speaking. Share your knowledge with other supporters. Spread this knowledge to moderates and undecided voters. Get the word out.

6) HIT THE UNIVERSITIES. They offer virtually unlimited resources of young voters eager to get involved. These students can provide some invaluable insight into what concerns them most. They are historically very politically active.

7) (Taken from BuzzFlash.com) Most voters in most elections do not vote for a given candidate - they vote against another candidate. Obama supporters need to provide voters compelling and emotional reason to vote against John McCain. And those reasons should be able to fit on a bumper sticker or label.

8) Get Creative. Think of new ideas to get the word out. Throw a witty saying on a T-Shirt. Mow your cornfield into a work of art that can be seen from the air, detail your car with a giant O on it. Use your imagination.

You don't need to agree with all of his policies. But you do need to educate yourself on everything that is at stake. To paraphrase a book we all read as kids "I think we can. I think we can. I think we can." Well, don't think we can. YES WE CAN.

4. I agree, registering voters is #1. But there is some thing I've much afraid of.
Let's say we get thousands of new voters registered, and actually motivate them to go to the polls. Remember the LONG LINES of the last 2 Presidential elections? How many people have the time or the patience to do that? What about the vothing machines that don't work? I'm not even talking aboutillegalities here, I'm talking about machines that weren't stored properly, or new programming cards not installed right, or poorly trained people unable to power them up right.

I gotta tell ya, I'm not in any physical condition to stand in any line for hours. I'm not even sure I could do One hour. I'm seriously considering absentee, but I don't think it's fair to ask ANY voter to have to wait hours, or deal with inoperable machines!

Is anybody still working on that kind of problem? I sure haven't heard of any.

That's not even getting into the problems we've had with the illegal stuff like voter roll purging and sending vpter info to addresses of soldiers who have been deployed and their info is returned undeliverable so they are declared not registered!

I'm much more afraid of TAHT kind of stuff than I am of not enough votes for Barack!

7. So his 16 month plan to bring us out of Iraq
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 12:33 AM by bluevoter4life
Constitutes a continued military presence? Where are you getting your facts from? Iraq is the main concern of the region right now. Afghanistan is an issue, but not as big as the clusterfuck we are currently in. This sounds cliched and straight out of the Repuke playbook, but by focusing our efforts on Afghanistan and Pakistan, which has been proven to harbor terrorists, we can pull out of Iraq, where there was nothing, and focus our efforts and resources on the real issues.

9. War Is Not The Answer
Killing people in Afghanistan and Pakistan solves nothing. Obama does not want to pull out of Iraq - - - he wants to maintain a presence there and continue the battle, fighting, killing, spending . . . .

We need to get the fuck out of there. My stance is NOT A REPUBLICAN stance. THE REPUBLICANS WANT WAR. I don't.

Did I mention that we need to GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE?

10. His plan for Afghanistan and Pakistan
Calls for reduced military operations and devoting more to non-military reseources. We all agree we need to get the fuck out, which is precisely what he is trying to do.

11. A president does not have to "try to get out."
He gets the fuck out. But feel free to keep lapping up the bullshit. I'm sure you will.

12. McIntosh...
Your making it seem like he can snap his fingers and our troops will magically be home. I got news. It doesn't happen that way. He can't just pull them out, it is going to take some time. He agrees we need to get out, we all do. But he understands its not going to happen overnight.

13. You are mincing words, concepts and strategies.
Start moving them out of the entire region as safely as possible. Sixteen months, my ass. He wants to leave troops in the region indefinitely. Like I said . . . . . NO WAR!

GET THE FUCK OUT.

14. This is great
Two newbies battling it out. You are all missing a big point, the problem is not so much registering voters to get Obama elected. The real reason for registering all these new voters is to get him a congress and senate he can work with.
