The Pew News IQ Quiz- take the test
Pretty sad that people in my age and education group only got 50%
of the questions right. There are only 12 questions so the validity
of the test doesn't hold up to any normal statistical standards for
deriving the conclusions they seem to be suggesting. 12/12

I thought the questions were way too easy.

Edited on Fri Jul-18-08 02:47 PM by JoeIsOneOfUs
I bet people did worse on those ?s because they picked the next closest answer, not a wildly wrong guess.

4. No for the average american, sadly
Some of those questions are difficult. Especially the numeric values of Dow Jones..alot of people don't pay attention to that.
I think the quiz while short is pretty legitimate. I',m betting a whole lot of people don't know whom Ben Bernenke is.

I have a relative who does work for Pew so I can tell you, I'm well aware of the general attitudes in polls like this..

the Dow Jones one; the Federal Reserve one (thought it was still Alan Greenspan); and the DNC one (thought it was Rahm Emmanuel - I always tend to get the various party organizations confused with each other). Admittedly, I'm a foreigner!

I mean, how can you tell that the Democrats have a majority in the House?
The Repiglickins still "win" almost every vote.

I got them all right, of course, but I'm kinda obsessed with this stuff.

16. This is where the McCain myth comes from
The notion that he has an unquestionable advantage on foreign policy just because he was tortured over thirty years ago (which was good for the privileged rich boy; he deserved a little adversity) and fought in a completely unrelated war. Yeah, it's an absurd idea, I know, but the corporate media keeps drilling "war hero, war hero, torture, advantage on national security." This idea is manufactured. If the public was left to make up their own minds about this without the cable news tabloid channels, the the average American wouldn't even know he fought in a war, much less give him a completely undeserved advantage on foreign policy.

53. I missed the same one
I remembered it passing 12K on it's way down a while ago and so I thought maybe it was closer to 10K, but I didn't really think it was down to 10K.

I was sure about the others and this was the one where I really just guessed because I knew it had not passed 10K but I knew it was below 12K. I have been trying to not pay attention to the dow too much. When I do all I can think about is "if I had pulled my money out I would still have that money" or "if I had pulled that money out 6 months ago and then put it back in now"....which are not a happy thoughts :(
