McCain gets Social Security but criticizes system
By DAVID A. LIEB
Associated Press Writer

Carolyn Kaster
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. smiles as he greets supporters on the tarmac in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday, July 17, 2008.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Although Republican presidential candidate John McCain has called Social Security "a disgrace," he still cashes his own retirement check every month.

"I'm receiving the benefits, the system is broken and, unfortunately, my children and grandchildren, according to the trustees of the Social Security system, will not have the same benefits the present retirees have," McCain told reporters Thursday on his campaign bus.

McCain's 2007 tax return shows Social Security benefits of $23,157 for the year, an average of $1,929.75 a month. He said he started receiving the payments "whenever I was eligible."

2. He's such a hypocrite. And is he really worried about
his kids and grandkids having a safety-net with the millions his wife has? He could turn over his SS checks to his kids from his first marriage if he was worried about them.

What a POS.

10. Has he said it should be abolished?
Social Security was a promise of a trust fund set up for all Americans. It has devolved in to another source for the general fund. SS should have always been managed as a separate account.

4. ...and that's in addition to his $58k/yr disability income.
...and his salary, as a Senator, of $169,300.

Soooo...even without the sugar mama, McCain makes over $250k per year, not including pensions, investment income, etc.

6. Can you decline Social Security payments?

I mean, he paid in, so he gets the money back. It's part of the process.

If he can decline payments, he should decline in protest of the system he says is so broken.

if he cannot decline payments, then this is a worthless story.

9. There is no hypocrisy.

Hating the system and being a part of it are not mutually exclusive.

If there were eligibility levels before you were allowed to receive payments and he was getting them while married to a very rich person, that would be hypocrisy. This however, isn't.

16. I have known people who never filed for their SS
When I was a kid, my parents knew an older couple who didn't draw it because they didn't think they needed it.

8. I have been paying into SS since 1972. Anybody who tries to deny
me my due when I retire is gonna have me to deal with up close and REAL personal.

You'll have to pry MY MONEY from my cold, dead hands.

17. This man makes no sense, as usual.
"I'm receiving the benefits, the system is broken and, unfortunately, my children and grandchildren, according to the trustees of the Social Security system, will not have the same benefits the present retirees have," McCain told reporters

The system is not broken. That's the part where you ARE receiving your benefits, dumbass, benefits you don't even NEED. It's representatives like YOU who will ensure your children and grandchildren (and everyone else's) might not receive the benefits they're due. If Congress continues to abuse or manages to outright abolish Social Security, well of course the benefits would go away.

:banghead:

has to justify their decision to receive SS. I am not a McCain fan, but I am not a fan of petty politics, either. Unless you're supporting the sole use of SS to be a welfare program (which it is not and was not intended to be), there is no hypocrisy here. Who knows where the money goes? Maybe that's part of what he donates to charity.

It is not my money. It is not your money. It is HIS money.

I can complain about gas prices, and poor fuel efficiency of our cars today, and still drive wherever I desire to go. I can complain about NCLB and still send my kids to school. I can complain about the healthcare system, and insurance bureaucrats and still go for my annual check-up.
