Sen. Barack Obama's campaign raised $52 million in June, his campaign manager said Thursday morning - not quite a record for the high-flying campaign, but close to it. The campaign had raised $55 million in February, during the Democratic primaries.

But it's still more than twice what Republican rival Sen. John McCain raised during June -- $22 million.

Yet the Republican National Committee, which is backing the party's presidential candidate with its own resources, also had nearly $68 million in the bank - a combined treasury which the Obama campaign was mindful about in reporting its own June haul.

"Supporters like you helped raise $52 million,'' campaign manager David Plouffe said in an e-mail to campaign supporters this morning. "And together with the DNC, we now have nearly $72 million in the bank. That's a very strong financial position to be in. ''

1. How much will McCain get per month in federal funds now?

4. I thought he took an illegal loan out on that money on the come during the primary
I think he has to sign over to the bank most of his matching funds for repayment of that loan out of whatever he gets now?

2. Whoa! And here I was nervous that it wasn't big numbers
because there had been no leaks. MORE proof that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about

This is VERY EXCITING -- and the DNC took in a chunk, too! Road to the White House!

3. Wow, just a few days ago I recall Obama's campaign hinting it was just over $30 million
This is certainly a pleasant surprise.

I remember last month when Obama opted out of public financing and had his worst fund raising month in a while. My republican dad was bragging "that's all because of him opting out of public financing", even when I pointed out that the fund raising figure was money raised in May, and Obama made his financing decision public only a day or two before announcing those fund raising figures. I guess I have the last laugh now.
