(Reuters) - The White House offered support on Wednesday for Vice President Dick Cheney, a powerful proponent of the Iraq war, after the conviction of his top aide dealt a fresh blow to Cheney's political reputation and raised new questions about his influence.
Following are some key facts about Cheney.

* Cheney, 66, is one of President George W. Bush's closest advisers and has had more power than many of his predecessors.

* He is a lightning rod for criticism by Democrats partly because of his former role as head of the oil service firm Halliburton, a big contractor in Iraq, and his strong advocacy for the Iraq war.

* Cheney is a favorite among conservatives, who trust him to push issues they care about like gun rights.

* After the September 11 attacks on the United States, Cheney worked out of sight for long stretches at an "undisclosed location," and minimized his appearances with Bush to guard against losing both elected executives in a single attack.

* Cheney, a former congressman who served the first President George Bush as defense secretary in the 1991 Gulf War, headed the search committee in 2000 for George W. Bush's vice presidential candidate before finally taking the position himself.

* In February, 2006 Cheney caused a political uproar when he accidentally sprayed a 78-year-old man on his hunting party with birdshot and failed to disclose it publicly until the following day.

* He has had four heart attacks but none since becoming vice president in January 2001. Doctors found a blood clot in his left leg this week but he was able to return to work and will be treated with blood thinning drugs, his office said.

* Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 30, 1941, Richard Bruce Cheney got his undergraduate and master's degrees in political science from the University of Wyoming.

* He is married to the former Lynne Ann Vincent, a well-known conservative voice on cultural issues. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary.
