Phil Gramm says Americans are whiners? More "strict father" bullshit, is it?
The strict father model of parenting is one which places strong value on discipline as a means to survive and thrive in a harsh world.

Ideas involved in this model include:

That children learn through reward and punishment, as in operant conditioning.
That children become more self-reliant and more self-disciplined by having strict parents.
That the parent, particularly the father, is meant to mete out rewards for good behavior as well as punish bad behavior.

So this model of child-rearing would involve allowing a child to cry themselves to sleep. Picking up a child when it should be sleeping might foster dependence on the parents and is not a display of discipline...researchers have linked authoritarian childrearing with children who withdraw, lack spontaneity, and have lesser evidence of conscience (Maccoby & Martin, 1983).

The strict father model is discussed by George Lakoff in his books, including Moral Politics and Whose Freedom?. In these books, the strict father model is contrasted with the nurturant parent model. Lakoff argues that if the metaphor of nation as family and government as parent is used, then conservative politics correspond to the strict father model. For example, conservatives think that adults should not look to the government for assistance, lest they become dependent. Likewise, economically productive behavior should be rewarded by incentives such as tax cuts.

3. I am somewhat confused by Gramm
I haven't heard him lash out and squash the attempts of Fannie and Freddie to have their whining salved. But I guess that's just different huh??

5. When will these morons learn that they're our EMPLOYEES and not our parents?
I realize the primate pack behavioral model is tough to get around for old Alphas, but they really ought to try.

12. I am reminded of that moran in Texas
who said something outrageous to the effect of, when a woman is being raped, it's inevitable, so she should just lay back and enjoy it.

:grr: :nuke:

That kind of smartass callousness puts me in a cool state of rage, the kind where you're so angry, you're calm. The kind where you go, "Awright, you esso bee, I'll give you that. But I've taken notes and I've just loaded for bear." That's the kind of rage where my granddaddy used to look at someone with half-lidded eyes and say with a quiet, steady voice, "Y'know? You make my ass crave cold, cold buttermilk." Anyone with a half a brain would quietly move a half a county away. We knew exactly what he meant.

Gramm's reasoning is the same that as other Texas yay-hoo's, and my angered reaction is, (quelle surprise), also the same as it was those years back when I heard that rape-insult. Is it the crude oil in the water table that rots republicans' brains?? Surely the repug gene pool is deeper than an inch and a half, right? They can't all be screwing their sisters and having idiot children.

Can they?

I mean, for truly, obscenely stupid, you simply cannot beat a Texas repug politician. The only reason they don't slither off into the Gulf is because Oklahoma repug politicians suck.

He wants some stern parenting? Let's start by working on that smart mouth of his. The Stern Parenting Guide states that the best way to the brains is through the backside. The preferred method would be to snatch his wrinkled old arse across our collective knees and beat it until it won't hold shit. :spank:

At this moment in time, that would satisfy me (and about 60 million other Americans) right down to the ground.

And if he whines, we'll do like Stern Grammaw used to warn, we'll give him something to whine about
:spank:
:spank:
:spank:

Bet he'll think twice about (1) stealing and (2) admitting it in public and (3) then getting smart about it.

14. That old Esso Bee ain't dead yet?
I lived in Texas when he made that remark. I despised him so badly that I had repressed the name.

I thoroughly loved living in Texas the three times that I did. Texans are wonderful people. How in Dog's name do you get such gawdawful ignernt politicians? The railroad commission always produced the worst.

15. Unfortunately, no. That fossil is still around, fouling politics.
Texas republicans are scum-sucking, slimy, corrupt, glad-handing assholes.

Yup, since the powerful Railroad Commission went totally repub in '94 (& has remained as such), it's primary function serves as enabler for TX oil & gas companies to rule the state.

We have some good, tough, never-give-up Democrats hanging in there, fighting the good fight, but they are currently outnumbered. That trend is changing, however, as some of the snookered populace is waking up to the damage inflicted on our state by the TX GOP.

We'll see.

17. I still adore Jim Hightower
He was on Free Speech TV the other night. FSTV is one of the best reasons to have Dish. That, and Link and Veria. You won't get those on Murdoch's DirecTV. I live so far out in the country they have to pipe in daylight. Being a Blue sort of person, myself, I'm choosy where my paltry few $ go.

I don't think he even has kids, so the whole FATHER thing is off the wall.

No, this is just another GOP jackass being a jackass.

Not a "daddy" issue.
