5. They have a great poster shop on their website.
Some of their covers are amazing. The one right after 9/11 was particularly moving.

3. I posted a number of covers criticizing the Bush administration last night.
I have to admit, the difference is that the covers lampooning Bush were lampooning actual flaws in character or policy. The Obama cover is lampooning false perceptions of Obama. There should be an interesting cover in response to all this in a few weeks.

is the one with the name "The New Yorker" on it. Those are different magazines.

8. Here's a New Yorker cover which may serve to redeem them at least
a little bit:

The actual cover was more subtle, the missing towers in semi-gloss against a matte background. It looked like a solid black cover at first. It caught the sorrow over the loss of the towers without any of the jingoistic bombast that so many memorials had.

9. That's very different- a pumpkin doesn't have anything to do with Cheney's race
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 09:33 PM by lastliberalintexas
The New Yorker could have used a different caricature with which to mock Obama, and it would have just been par for the course. They could have done a Mad Magazine type cover playing up his nerdy appearance and big ears (I like nerds, so don't take this personally). They could have even had a cover denigrating the Chicago Machine politics from which Obama came. They could have done any number of things which would not have been dependent on his race, but chose instead to focus on the racially derogatory stereotypes that the right wing is feeding to the electorate.

Comparing Obama to Osama has absolutely nothing in common with portraying Cheney as a piece of fruit.

10. They weren't mocking Obama, they were mocking the lies spread about
Obama. The problem is that they were too subtle about it.

13. Yes, but they did a rather poor job of it
Mocking the lies spread about Obama would have entailed a cover with Hannity or O'Reilly or Rush shilling for the right wing. Rush pushing those monkey tshirts from Georgia while Hannity shouts "Yes he's an Islamofascist with a crazy Christian preacher" and O'Reilly nodding while lusting after a falaffel carrying "terrorist" looking lady.

Their satire failed miserably. All they did was reinforce the lies, not undermine them.

21. spare me
The New Yorker cover does work. It's only the Perpetually Outraged who are SO afraid of those darned ignorant hordes (tm) that they think it didn't

There's plenty of ignorance to go around on all areas of the political spectrum, but the New Yorker cover is some great satire.

32. I'm glad you think so
I happen to disagree, and I know plenty of people who will simply take this cover as reinforcing the right wing lies being spread about Obama. They won't see anything in this image which actually undermines what the media have been telling them, and they won't see anything in this image to make them think that those stereotypes just might be false. Satire, like beauty, is unfortunately often in the eyes of the beholder.

It's strange, because I'm not even much of a fan of Obama. I just don't see anything in this image which actually mocks the media, just a caricature which mocks the Obamas.

Please. I haven't seen -anyone- on DU who didn't "get it" and I really, truly don't think that the general population here is any degree brighter than the general population of the country

45. we came up with what we thought the cover should have been
Use the same cartoon, but put it in a thought balloon from either McCain or Rove. Then the intent would have been clearer and the cartoon would have made more sense. As it is, it looks like an amateurish caricature of the Obamas and the details really do not stand out until you study it.

16. Is the pirpose of this cover to defend Cheney from
absurd characterizations from his enemies? To show he is being treated unfairly using "satire"? Or do they have check boxes on the inside covers where they mark: This Caricature Is: Satire ___, -or- We really mean it this time ___.

Why don't you look at the

art/toons that Blitt has done in the past?

Now this one is just so funny he has a big nose!!!! har har har

Now this one is in 2006 and Bush and Cheney are just the odd couple, man that's deeply political
and sardonic.. What a genius on satire! They are just the odd couple, get it?

Now this one is that a take off on the famous kiss photo, but the other sailor is
not really happy with the kiss if you blow it up!!! Just in time for the don't kiss don't tell time
in the military 1996. Ha, Ha, Blitt is just a Mark Twain isn't he?

Oh, my god, a burka joke..... he is just so funny..........what a genius, he's better than Mark Twain.!!!

38. Ok, he is edgy and sometimes hard to read.
But I love the Bush Cheney one. I don't see it as the odd couple. I see it as Bush being Cheney's handmaiden. I think it is brilliant satire.

I understand that a lot of people won't get the Obama cover, but I believe in my heart of hearts several things:

The New Yorker in no way intended to harm Obama with either their cover or their article.

Obama will benefit from this. If I am wrong, shame on me. But I believe this is a critical point in the campaign and it will elevate him.

Peace

The Artist is not that deep if you look at his stuff. Don't forget this is 2006
during our senate and house elections or does that register with you?

The handmaiden analogy is even worse, unless it is from
the book and it is not.
