The only liberal in an office of conservatives Christians.
That would be me. It's so hard not to say something when I hear conversation like this:

"Oh, my doctor had a signed portrait of himself with Governor Ehrlich (R-MD) in his office and my husband said, oh, good, he's a conservative!"

"That reminds me of when my 11 year old said to his teacher that he loved President Reagan!"

"When the Dixie Chicks came on, we turned the television off."

"My son's friends all come from good Christian homes. I don't think they would ever drink."

:scared:

2. I feel you, so, so much
"We're spending money like a bunch of liberals. We need to start spending like conservatives"

"God destroyed New Orleans"

"I don't care who leaked what to who."

"It's been statistically proven that black people aren't as smart as white people"

3. No one in a good christian home would commit incest or divorce either
or support the endless slaughter of humans in Iraq. Oh wait, I'm wrong. They do.

Sons friends all come from good christian families, meaning they are all having porn star sex but they are all virgins.

Nothing like indoctrinating 11 year olds to love a man who ordered the deaths of priests, nuns and children.

FUCK THEM VERY MUCH

4. Sorry to hear that
when I am around the "fish" cars, I recite part of a poem by Kabir: The fish in the water's not thirsty.

Maybe you could whistle a kirtan or a zkr or music of other faiths.

7. Well . . WELCOME to DU!
I guess it's a pity for them that the Chicks won all 5 of the Grammy's they were nominated for, huh?

I would ask "Why on earth would an 11 year old "love" Ronald Regan? - That's just creepy"

and say "I hope your son's friends aren't the kind of Christian like that guy Haggart"

(you are home, my friend!)

You have my deepest sympathies...

It's Gov. O'Malley now, suckers. :P It pisses me off when I see an "Ehrlich" or "Steele" bumpersticker, especially after the election... :puke:

The country station my co-workers listen to still doesn't play Dixie Chicks. :eyes: And this is MD!?!? :grr:

Riiiiight. They never ever drink.... ;)

24. The only radio station I can tune in in my office is a country station. Yech!
No Dixie Chicks. Just all of the other schlock they play.

9. A Biblical image for you
Think of yourself as Daniel in the lions' den.

Seriously, how awful for you. I'd hate that situation.

My husband has just one major right wing nut in his office, but the guy is loud, belligerent, and never shuts up. He annoys everyone. Finally my husband rather angrily told him to STFU, and to everyone's surprise, he actually did for a while.

12. Reminds me of the fundie nutjob that moved in a couple of houses down from us.
She moved in, and a month later came over with her mouse of a hubby to knock on our door and accuse our son of egging her house. Of course anyone who knows our son just knows he does not do stuff like that, and I flat out called her and her husband liars.

She then said that it could not be anyone that her daughter knows, because her daughter only knows 2 people, and that they are good Christian girls. Well, I REALLY hated to be the one that broke the news to her that I saw her daughter a couple of nights before sneaking out of her bedroom window, and disappearing into the night, and she might want to start worrying about her own damn family instead of every one else's. I didn't tell her about the other three times that I saw her daughter getting out of a car a couple blocks down the street from her house so that her folks wouldn't see her getting dropped off by a different teenage boy each time.

It just amazes me sometimes how delusional some people can actually be. Never underestimate the power of denial.

19. As a former juvenile delinquent (now and adult corrupter), let me assure
you that those "good christian girls" were always the best to "date". Whatever you got they want and have no concept of moderation. According to my dad, it was like that in his time too.

It actually might have helped them both in the long run.

17. the ones screaming the loudest about their purity and righteousness
are typically the ones hiding the biggest problems.

I have known many vocal rightwing christians who...

- are alcoholics..and I mean the kind that see bats if they don't get a drink
- cheat on their spouses with people they meet at church...kind of funny
- cheat on their taxes
- steal but justify it with some sort of nutsy rationalization

the list can go on.

18. I'm one of two liberals in a small office of around 15 people
The conservatives know better than to bring up politics with me - they learned the hard way after I buried them with facts and examples of hypocrisy on their side. :)

For the most part, we'll just make little jokes back and forth about canceling out each other's votes during elections, etc.

The super-fundy of the office sent out an email joke once detailing the differences between a liberal and conservative which consisted of their responses to their families being attacked on the streets and the liberal worrying about the attacker more than his family (did he come from a broken home; is he a minority, etc.) while the conservative response was, "Bang." I emailed everyone back (including some clients he had put in the CC) and told him he got it wrong with the conservative and re-worked it so that it was an allegory of Iraq - the conservatives were warned several times about that mugger; the conservative's family was killed, but he went after some other guy he didn't like instead of the killer. He finally got the other guy and declared victory to all his friends and family while the original killer continues to operate and even sends taunting videotapes of himself to the conservative, etc.

The boss, another religious conservative, called the first guy in and chewed him out for the original email since he should have been smarter about sending out political emails like that out with me in the CC box. :)

20. At Least It's JUST Your Office
I work in a small town in the South where liberal thought is considered heresy and speaking my mind would be akin to commercial suicide. I think 9 out of ten cars in our parking lot have W stickers emblazoned on the bumper. At least I've discovered DU as my outlet.

23. I Ask Them A Lot of Questions
To which they have no answers.

Without making a point, I make one.

But like a mindless Weeble, they may wobble, but they don't fall down.

26. welcome to DU, Mr. Ected
I am glad you found our island of sanity.

I live in a Democratic stronghold, but it wasn't always this way. I was brought up around simpletons in the midwest, like what the OP quotes.

Your questioning technique sounds like it could be very effective. My spouse and brother both use that technique and are experts at coming up with those types of questions, so I know.

I laughed at your analogy of the Weeble.

Had to escape living around those types and I fled for a blue state at a very young age. It's gratifying to look up political donations and find 95 per cent of one's neighbors donated to Democratic candidates.
