Captain America: 1941-2007 (Spoiler)
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 10:13 AM by TechBear_Seattle
Damn you, liberal media, for killing off America's greatest patriotic superhero!

Comic book hero Captain America dies

NEW YORK - Captain America has undertaken his last mission — at least for now. The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the Daily News reported.

On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse, according to the newspaper.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941 to incarnate patriotic feeling during World War II. Over the years, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.

The full obituary can be read at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070307/ap_on_en_ot/captain_america

Granted, it is not unusual for superheroes to come back from the dead, or even to visit from an alternate universe where they did not die. Still, it is a sad end for one of this country's jingoistic icons.

1. You should have a spoiler warning
Just like how Tuesday is the day of the week new DVD's are released, Wednesday is the day new comics are released. Since few comic stores are open this hour of the morning, the people who might be inclined to read the story may not want the ending revealed.

2. Somehow, it seems appropriate

Now I’m calling on citizens from all over the world
This is Captain America calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

6. There's a rule in super-hero comics
The only people who stay dead are Bucky Barnes (Captain America's partner from WWII), the second Robin, and Uncle Ben (Spider-Man's uncle).

And it turns out that none of them are dead. Bucky and Robin both returned in 2005 as the Winter Soldier (Bucky was found by the Russians after his supposed death suffering from amnesia and was trained as an assassin) and Robin as the new Red Hood, a villain at odds with Batman. An Uncle Ben from a timeline where he never died has been introduced into one of the Spider-Man cartoons.

I doubt we've seen the last of Captain America.

7. Superman has been killed how many times?
I came to the conclusion many years ago that superheroes are like Time Lords: you may think you've killed them, but they will be back in the next episode with a new costume and somewhat different personality traits. I think Captain America is the only hero from the 40s not to have died yet.

10. Oy! The spoiler thing doesn't help if you still have the obituary in the title.

11. Would you prefer the title of the actual news article?
Comic book hero Captain America dies

Better?

Anyway, looks like The Punisher will probably pick up the mantle, making way for a slightly more deranged, right wing extreme Cap.
