Getty News plying photoshopped Iran Missile launch picture
From their site:

Caption: 1 day ago: In a handout picture released on the news website of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, four long and medium range missiles rise into the air after being test-fired at an undisclosed location in the Iranian desert on July 9, 2008. Iran today test-fired a missile it said is capable of reaching Israel, angering the United States amid growing fears that the standoff over the contested Iranian nuclear drive could lead to war.

Moreover....did they not launch these missiles...yes. So what is the outrage?

3. the outrage is ...
the image has been altered to exaggerate what actually happened. if you do not believe that has been photoshopped then you are just not in reality. news organizations are supposed to report what actually happened...not augment it!

you can say i need medication all you want...but the fact is these images are altered versions of reality...they should NOT be presented as a news item...but hey...who cares what the media does...right?

17. As an impartial observer, you're embarrassing yourself.
By your logic these two statements are the same:

OMC is a DU'er.

OMC is a rapist.

I only changed one word. No big deal eh?

21. Horribly Distorted Analogy. Pretty Dumb One Actually.
An accurate analogy would be:

OMC is a DU'er

omc is a DU'er

End result? Who gives a rat's fat ass.

It's a big deal.

Altered propaganda like this will be used as their reasoning if they achieve their goals.

36. ProdigalJunkMail is not embarassing himself
However, your retorts put you in an embarassing light. I have issue with any news media augmenting photos of military matters for the purpose of creating heightened fear in its audience and thus heightened capacity to accept another war. You think everyone here would agree, given the obvious hype and lies that led to the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq.

It's shameless propaganda, pure and simple.

Any reputable news organization should know better.

If it doesn't embellish the story, then why would they bother to change the image?

14. Let me put this another way...
If the photos are doctored to show more missles than were actually fired, who's to say the photos weren't doctored, entirely, and Iran really shot off only bottle rockets celebrating the anniversary of the July 9 freedom movements (http://aryamehr11.blogspot.com/2006/07/9-july-18-tir-historical-date-in.html).

That's the point.

25. I guess 75% reality, 25% fantasy is good enough for you

"Are the missiles real? Was the test firing real? " Only 3 missiles were actually launched in that frame, but the photo was altered to show 4: 75% was real - 25% wasn't.

I personally give a fuck when news organizations get involved in government propaganda.

15. It looks like
they wanted more symmetry or something for the grouping, added a missile but repeated a dust grouping for
correct shade and lighting. It clashes with the explicit stating of three groups of three. So that calls into question their entire photo editing staff, procedures, rationale, coordination with actual facts(if they ARE going to sex up photos) and professionalism and trustworthiness in general.

That bad, that arrogant, that sloppy and that untrustworthy. A smart shopper knows then to use other sources. A kid with his camera taking a photo and putting it honestly online is worth more than all the millions spent on the corporate crap that can't help ruining a simple product. They should go broke and they aren't worth going to.

Insidious? In such a corrupt product the salmonella of propaganda can propagate easily, on demand or by sheer accident.

The picture looks more dramatic with more SMOKE and not a tiny rocket launcher indeed, and that 4th photoshopped missile balances it out more artistically.

52. Now on MSNBC.com. One missile failed ...
http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/10/1191157.aspx

As the media editor working the msnbc.com home page yesterday, I was frustrated with the quality of a fuzzy video image we published of the Iranian missile launch. So I was thrilled when the top image crossed the news wires. Today, I learned that the image was apparently manipulated, possibly to hide the fact that one missile failed. Many major U.S. newspapers and news websites ran the photo as well.  Read more about it here: http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/10/in-an-iranian-image-a-missile-too-many/index.html?hp
