Watch the magic: 9/11 changed everything. 11/4 will change everything back.
Hello, all you right wingers, Republicans, and conservatives--all you 23-percenters still hanging on out there.

Let's take a little stroll down memory lane, shall we?

-- Remember how you howled over the "invasive" Census questionnaire under Clinton? You howled over how much personal information they wanted, and screamed about the violation of your Fourth Amendment rights. But then, you said, 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly it was okay for the government to know and archive EVERYTHING about us all. "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear," you said. You didn't mind that the kind of people who come from the kind of schools that discourage "optical intercourse" and "making eye babies" would have access to your every Internet move, your every phone call, every e-mail, every text message, every purchase, your medical and DMV records, your school records, everything you wear and carry in public, everything. No, it was necessary, you said. Patriots accept it, you said, because 9/11 changed everything. But watch. 11/4 will change everything back. Suddenly you're going to start howling over your privacy rights again.

-- Remember how you agonized and howled over unchecked presidential power when it was Clinton writing Executive Orders? Remember how you howled over Paul Begala's "stroke of the pen, law of the land, kinda cool" quote? Here's just one example of the outrage you blasted all over the Internet and the radio talk shows. "Oh, what a delicate thread from which our liberty is suspended," you said. But then 9/11 came. 9/11, you said, changed everything. You endorsed the "unitary executive" theory--that an all-powerful executive branch was necessary in such times. But we're gonna watch the magic happen. 11/4 will change everything back. Suddenly checks and limits on executive power will be very important to you again.

-- Remember how you howled over the assaults on the Constitution when it was Clinton appointing "activist judges" you feared would "legislate from the bench" and Gore was saying the Constitution was a "living, breathing document" subject to interpretation in the light of current situations? You howled, you wailed, you called for them all to be voted out. But then 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly it was okay for the executive branch to dismantle the Constitution and its protections. Anyone on your Web forums who didn't agree was dogpiled and banned for being "for the terrists." 9/11 changed everything. But watch. Magically, 11/4 will change everything back.

-- Remember how you defended impeachment as a hard line necessary for the balance of powers and the integrity of the executive branch, even if it was just for a blowjob? Remember how you insisted high moral standards were essential for all elected officials? But 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly impeachment was off the table. Suddenly morals charges were harassment. We're watching. Because we know that magically 11/4 will change everything back.

-- Remember how you howled over Clinton's so-called "wag the dog" military strikes? That was outrageous, you cried. Then, 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly it was okay to order military strikes under false or questionable pretenses. Anyone who challenged it was a guilty of treason, you said. According to you, 9/11 changed everything. But we know 11/4 will change everything back.

-- Oh, how you howled over Clinton's dealings with money and donors and corporations. But 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly Halliburton and KBR and no-bid contracts were all okay. And what would you have said if there was a Blackwater when Clinton was in office? You were already ranting about rumors of black helicopters and secret internment camps being built. If there had been a Blackwater under Clinton you would have come unhinged. But 9/11 changed everything. A private government-contracted mercenary police/military force was suddenly okay. But watch. 11/4 will change everything back.

-- You howled over Clinton's alleged and rumored cruelty toward women. But 9/11 came along, and 9/11 changed everything. Suddenly torture was okay. Even if it ruined our moral standing in the world, violated all the principles and standards of our own fathers and forefathers, provided no more reliable intelligence than in the Dark Ages when torture victims under torment would confess to sex with the Devil, results in the deaths of many victims, creates more enemies and rallies our existing ones to more resolve, and put our own troops at risk. It didn't trouble or disturb you at all that your own government is in the torture business--that it knows how to do it, and is fully willing to do it. But watch, 11/4 will change everything back.

11/4 is officially Election Day in the United States of America. But we're watching, because we know it is also National Right Wing Pivot Day, the day when everything changed by 9/11 changes back.

1. You think Right-Wing hypocrisy started with 9/11?
On that issue, 9/11 changed nothing.

2. Its a good post....
but I'm afraid that if you think this one election will reverse the damage that has been done to this country, you are going to be sorely disappointed. I am hopeful it will begin the movement back in the correct direction, but it will take many years and possibly several elections.

7. Thanks!
I'm not saying this one election will reverse that kind of damage. I'm just tweaking the right, knowing they'll reverse themselves on every position they've held over the last eight years once Democrats win the White House again.

And I don't mean to sound overconfident. I'm just riffing on current poll trends. Republicans are on the ropes now. They're even advising their own to distance themselves from the Republican brand. But of course no one should count them out.

3. Papa - first of all - WELCOME! to DU and if that's your first major post...
I'm going to be watching you.
You are off to a great start.
I agree with those who say that it will take several election cycles (or more) to rid the country of the stench left by the HUGE fart of the Chimp empire.

Yet, I also agree that people lost their freaking minds after 9/11.
I also submit that on 11/04 everything will change back.
That's not necessarily a good thing.
They went after Clinton with everything they had and they eventually took him down.
Let's pray that on day one of the Obama's moving into 1600 Pennsylvania avenue, they don't arrive with visible targets on their backs.

I fear that's what's going to happen.
The silent, compliant, lap-dog press will suddenly grow a pair and go after them just like they did Clinton.

I hope not.
And if not, maybe things will be changed back.
We'll see.

Again...welcome to DU Papa!

5. I am totally perplexed by...
people who think this election is a foregone conclusion. I also think its dangerous to take such a position. Shouldn't we realize how desperate the wingnuts are becoming and how much they have to lose and how confident they feel about propagandizing and cheating their way to victory? Racism is still significantly embedded in this country. Don't get comfortable till Nov. 5th.

Of course Obama will not fix everything. It's only a first step, that will make it possible to take further steps.

6. Not everything will change back.
Justice was not served and the constitution not repaired. Elections can't change permanent damage.

8. Of course ...
It's another way to say IOKIYAR.

And watch the "news" media return to doing investigative journalism -- when it's a Democratic administration.

9. Yep, you're right
They'll have an epiphany, get remorseful for their sins of omission, and turn over a new leaf. :grr:
