'Hispanics Discovered Florida' Plate Proposed
'Hispanics Discovered Florida' Plate Proposed

A specialty license plate that reads "Hispanics Discovered Florida" may soon be available to Florida drivers.

The proposed plate's message is about cultural pride for Florida's 3.6 million Hispanics. The idea came from the National Hispanic Corporate Achievers, a Central Florida group that sponsors minority job fairs.

Local 6 showed a sketch of what the plate may look like, featuring an image of a Spanish galleon on it and the date 1513.

The tag also shows palm trees and the Web site address of www.hispanicachievers.org.

2. I dind't know it was lost.
In fact, I'm pretty sure it had an indigenous population when the European Spaniards arrived.

The facts are a bit hard on that cultural pride thing.

4. This is new?
from wikipedia

Ponce de León equipped three ships at his own expense, and set out on his voyage of discovery and conquest in 1513. On March 27, 1513, he sighted an island, but sailed on without landing. Between April 2–8 he landed on the east coast of the newly "discovered" land at a point which is disputed, but was somewhere on the northeast coast of the present State of Florida.<9> Although the most commonly accepted location is Saint Augustine, Florida, evidence indicates Ponce came ashore further south near the present location of Melbourne Beach.<1> Ponce de León claimed "La Florida" for Spain. He named the land La Florida, meaning flowery, either because of the vegetation in bloom he saw there, or because he landed there during Pascua Florida, Spanish for Flowery Passover, meaning the Easter season.<3><4> Pascua Florida Day, April 2, is a legal holiday in Florida.<10>

6. Really? The indians that greeted the Hispanics might disagree.

Oh well, if it encourages enough Hispanics to buy the specialty plate and helps the budget in Florida, I don't care if it is accurate or not.

8. Hispanics did NOT discover Florida. Amerindians discovered Florida and lived happily before the
Spaniards arrived.

9. That is very offensive to the people already there when Spain 'discovered' it.

And for that matter, maybe the same person can propose this plate: "Hispanics Killed The Arawak"?

11. First White Trash here..........Yay.
Actually it was the Vikings but they worshipped pagan gods of both genders so they were cool. Hispanic Over Achievers would do well to give up their urban myths. Are they purposely trying to piss off the general population? I know how I would feel sitting at a light behind a tag making that boast.
