Washington DC Metrorail jam-packed....daily
Metrorail records third highest weekday ridership day

829,998 riders used Metrorail on Friday, June 20

Hundreds of thousands of people helped Metro set the transit agency’s third highest ridership day in the history of the 32-year-old rail system on Friday, June 20. Riders took 829,998 trips, which were 24,845 more trips than the same comparable day last year. The Washington Nationals and Washington Mystics games contributed to Friday’s high numbers.

Since April of this year, Metrorail weekday ridership has cracked the top 12 highest ridership days in Metrorail history on nine separate occasions. Combined with Metrobus ridership, Metro provides more than 1.2 million trips on an average weekday.

1. Much of this will likely continue even after gas prices drop (I'm sure they will, eventually).
Commuters on rail begin to like being able to sip coffee, read the morning paper, have chit chats with fellow travelers and arrive at work far more relaxed than fighting traffic. I used to commute from the Jersey Shore into Manhattan daily. Loved it...

2. Kids are out of school and taking the Metro downtown.
Grew up in the DC area and used to love to take the bus into town and meet friends at the "District Line". We'd take off from there and just go places. There's so much to do and see.
