Fox "News": NAACP is registering prisoners to vote!!!!!111

If they are not convicted felons yet they still have voting priveleges and SOME PEOPLE ARE SAYING that the NAACP is going into the prisons to register these people!!!!!!!!!11 This story beoke this morning on Fox and "Friends". Gretchen Carlson was all over it, that Fox "broke" this story, and they are vowing to get to the bottom of it!!!!!!

Via caging, dropping Dem registrants off the rolls, under equipping polling places. Via machine fraud but that will be harder now because there has been a measure of attention to the machines.

That happened in MI the night of the Democratic primary. In 20 counties, the machines were counting "uncommitted" as "write in". Some of those machines were re-booted and who knows how many votes were lost that way. The Sec of State didn't want to even admit they did that. When I called, at first they only said they hand counted the ballots once the problem was identified. But as the rep got more relaxed, she said they "re-programmed" during the course of the night.

Some kind of record of tech interaction during the voting period needs to be part of the process. I don't know how many venues have already done that or how many really do keep track.

Anyone who will be legally eligible to vote in November needs to know that they are eligible to vote and they need to get registered. It doesn't matter if they are in prison or not, if they will have the right to vote then it is great that people are informing them of that right.

For FOX news to attack the NAACP for legal voter registration effort reeks of racism, and shows that FOX wants to make sure that eligible voters are disenfranchised.

...forever. That was the basis of Florida's bogus "cleaning" of the voter records before the 2000 election -- they were cleansing the rolls of black voters, most of whom are Democrats. Most of the voters thus disenfranchised were perfectly law-abiding citizens.

Prisoners by definition are convicts, right? So, this is a lie on two counts. First that the NAACP would try registering prisoners for the vote, and second, that prisoners could vote.

What happens in many states is that once a person has been convicted of a felony they lose the right to vote permanently. This sounds terrible -- and it is. I understand the idea of disenfranchising a convicted prisoner -- they lose their civil rights while in prison. But to make that permanent? It seems contrary to the intent of the Constitution.

We all know that young black men are disproportionately likely to have been arrested and convicted of a crime. Behaviors that might be passed off as youthful indiscretions in young white men (possession of pot, a little coke, DUI, disorderly conduct, addiction), which then would cause the judge to redirect the sentence to community service, treatment centers, etc. -- if the arrestee is black, often results in a harsh prison sentence and a permanent felony record.

Under the direction of Katherine Harris (remember her?) Florida hired a right-wing outfit to clean the voter rolls before the 2000 election. Basically they "cleaned" the rolls of black Democrats. If a felon in Texas was named John A. Public and a respectable voter in Florida was named John Q. Public, voila! And they never knew it until they tried to cast their ballot.
