Iowa rethugs call for release of federal conservation land for grazing and corn production

NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. government may be considering letting farmers use millions of acres of conservation property, officials say.

Floods in the Midwest have destroyed at least 4 million acres of highly valuable farmland, seriously impacting the success of harvests this year, The New York Times reported Saturday.

As the cost of corn and soy beans spike, the administration of U.S. President George Bush is being urged to take action to increase food production, the newspaper said.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, Friday called on the Agriculture Department to allow farmers to use land protected by conservation contracts.

1. Corporations and this administration in particular do this all the time
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 10:13 AM by gristy
They recognize and seize the opportunities presented by a crisis. They also manufacture and/or pump up those crisis as needed.

- A group flies airplanes into some buildings? Invade a country. And then a second one too.
- Telecoms in need of retroactive immunity? Write and pass a sweeping new FISA bill.
- A city is flooded? Privatize its schools.
- Social security broken? Try to kill it.
- Our children isn't learning? Pass a bill to help eliminate public education.
- Problems voting in Florida? Pass and fund a bill for every state to buy unsecured and unverifiable electronic vote counting equipment.

The list goes on and on and on. These are all things that could never be done in times of stability and non-crisis. There was a big article on this method in The Atlantic a few months ago.

2. Not gov't; a GOP administration.
The GOP has created a Disaster-Industrial Complex, similar to the Military-Industrial Complex.

Read all about it in Naomi Klein's website about it: Shock Doctrine and/or watch a You Tube video here.

Be forewarned: the video is not for the squeamish.

3. Ah yes. The shock doctrine. That was the term I was trying to remember but couldn't.
I've edited my post to be more clear that I was talking about this administration.
