For most of my adult life republicans have been in charge. Conservatives have continually said that my beliefs make me a traitor. It has always seemed like I was outside the wire looking in.
Now that there is a good chance of a progressive president and a solid majority for once I feel a sense of optimism that is almost alien.
I have no experience in rooting for the establishment. Will I be saying to someone that we should trust the president? I have never said that to anyone, ever.
Will I think to myself that the government will make things better? That's just crazy talk.
I don't think that I could ever be so trusting as to say these things but for the reforms to work it will require a level of faith in the system that many of us no longer have. I do no think that it will take much to make liberals turn against our brand new government as being more of the same.
I for one have decided to be patient with them. They do not know what to do with a majority yet. Obama will be a great president but he will spend a year just trying to keep all the timebombs that the republicans left from going off. It will take time for the fear level to drop and for us to remember how to be proud of our country.
Lets give them a year before we start yelling about broken promises, they have a hell of a mess to clean-up and it will take at least a year just to replace all of the GOP foot draggers that populate every corner of our government. Be patient with them but never let them forget that we are watching their actions with great interest and will not forget the promises they have made to us.
