Kroger recalls large brown eggs---MOLD inside
It says statewide in Texas but I thought I would share in case we find out later that other states are affected, also. Picture of the eggshell at the link. Saw the video the other night and it was nauseating to look at!!!

http://www.nbc5i.com/health/16657914/detail.html?rss=dfw&psp=news

Kroger is recalling some of its line of eggs after finding mold inside the shell.

Lynn Eddleman had a severe reaction when she cracked open one of her Kroger-brand large, brown eggs and found signs of black mold inside.

In fact nearly every single egg out of the two dozen Eddleman purchased from a Kroger in Rockwall contained signs of the mold.

The eggs Eddleman purchased have an expiration date of July 23

Kroger has since instituted a statewide recall of all of the Kroger brand large brown eggs with sell by dates of July 27 or earlier. Kroger said customers who bought the brown eggs can get a full refund or can trade them for replacement eggs.

11. Chickens are even dumber than neocons
If they planned a coup, it wouldn't go very far.

Any creature that can run around without a head until it bleeds out, obviously wasn't blessed with all that much upstairs to begin with.

3. Well, bet the date was changed and they are selling old eggs...
because the cost is high.. I wonder about the perishables that have become so expensive that aren't being bought in volume.. I wonder if they recycle.. to save money.

15. And some stores set up UN-refirgerated displays of eggs
..A few weeks ago I did not look inside the carton (my fault) and when I got home, I only had 16 eggs instead of 18.. I shop at this place all the time, and next time I go, IF I REMEMBER, I will tell the manager they owe me 2 eggs:)

4. How do mold spores get inside an egg?
Yes eggs go bad and get rotten. But moldy?

7. Look at the hens, they have an infection
and the mold gets in when it is formed.

13. No such thing that I've ever heard of. They get bacterial and viral diseases,
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 02:28 PM by kestrel91316
but our pathology class never covered ANY fungal disease of poultry that caused MOLDY EGGS.

Had a severe reaction, indeed. I would have had one, too. :puke:

Cracked eggs plus storage condition problems plus storage time problems, is my guess. They are trying to cut costs by not refrigerating them.

17. The egg shell is formed as the ovum moves down the cloaca.
Bacteria or virus can easily get into the egg before the shell is fully formed and harden.

10. HOW IN HELL do you get every egg in a pack full of MOLD??
They had to be cracked AND stored wrong, is my guess.

There's no disease or infection of the hens that would cause that. It's poor handling.

16. I'm with you on this- If a chicken is dealing with this kind of mold
internally, it isn't going to be producing any eggs.

Based on my experience and years of keeping chickens.

peace~

22. Makes me even more glad that I have my own chickens.
I bought five chicks last summer, built a small coop in the backyard and have so many eggs that I give them away. It's been a fun and healthy investment.

27. I'm with you.
I only have two left, and am considering picking up a few more hens. Still, the two that I have give us more eggs than we can eat in a week.

24. I'm considering rasing a few chickens again.
The best eggs I ever had were from my own free range hens ten or twelve years ago. Maybe it's time to start growing my own again.

28. In the late 1950s in Hawai'i we used to get eggs that had traveled a loooong way to the market
A couple of times Mom got a batch of moldy eggs. "Ugh! Storage eggs!" she said, as though she'd encountered this before in her life.

So I don't know about the sick chicken hypothesis, but that's definitely nasty.

Hekate
