"Half-cocked" Jean Schmidt center of controversy over false statements
WASHINGTON D.C. - Congresswoman Jean Schmidt has become the center of controversy over comments she made on the Congressional Record Thursday, June 5.

Schmidt stood before Congress and told them, "this very day there is indeed the drilling activity off our country's coast, not by our country's companies, that would be illegal. Instead the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida with their new energy partner Cuba."

The Congresswoman went on to criticize Congress for repeatedly blocking attempts to open up drilling off the coast of the United States and in Alaska "in the name of environmentalism." Schmidt's comments came under fire when it was discovered that neither China nor any company is currently drilling in the 90 miles between the Florida keys and Cuba....

"I hope Jean Schmidt will publicly retract her false statements and place remarks in the official Congressional Record clarifying that the urban legend she told was untrue," Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern said in a statement released Tuesday, June 17.

"Why should she apologize," Pfaff said in an interview Thursday, June 19. "She took what she believed to be valid information into her floor speech. Her point was not about China, she was pointing out the Democrats' refusal to lift the moratorium on drilling. This issue over China is getting in the way of the real problem."

LTTE:

It's happened again, yet another embarrassment to our area by Rep. Jean Schmidt.

By falsely claiming that China is drilling oil off the Florida coast, she has characteristically gone off half-cocked, showing that she will do or say anything to further an agenda ("Schmidt criticized for false drilling claims," June 17).

I prefer my representatives to be professional, thorough, and above all, truthful. Let's take care of that this November.

1. Mean Jean Schmidt ...
... the Emily Litella of politics - but without the charm.

Next she'll be talking about making Puerto Rico a steak, or the impact of violins on TV.

Shouldn't there be a minimum IQ requirement for those who hold political office?

4. How people get sucked into voting into congress someone like this is a marvel
of modern advertising techniques. Sure, she could deservedly get votes for "most whacked out bag lady who needs social services," but the Corporatists make her your congresscritter. Would be a sick joke, but it's not funny.

14. Why do I have to read this shit here?
Believe it or not, some women (just like men) are ignorant and greedy for reasons that are unrelated to how often they are getting laid or their ability to meet corporate beauty standards.

6. A recent poll put Schmidt behind in her current rematch with Wulsin

OH-02: Wulsin Leads Schmidt in New Poll

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 4:59 PM EDT

American Political Polling (5/31 - 6/2, registered voters):

    Vic Wulsin (D): 30
    Jean Schmidt (R-inc): 24
    David Krikorian (I): 13
    Undecided: 33
    (MoE: ±3.5%)
The poll also shows that Schmidt has a job approval rating of 23%, and Bush at 40%. But this is one weird poll, and frankly, the numbers seem a little suspect. Was there any attempt made to push leaners?

Here's a "bonus finding" from the poll: Obama leads McCain by 34-33 in Ohio's 2nd CD. Let the record show that this is an R+13 district.

I think Wulsin could pull this off. Schmidt won in the 2006 General election by only 3,785 votes, the worst showing of any Republican in the district since 1974. And the Republican meltdown will be even worse for them this year than it was then.

9. Say Good, Say Bad, Just Say...
Sounds like Jeanie needs to get on the hate radio shows and make some noise or fall off the wingnut radars. The crap that flows from her pie hole are talking points strictly programmed for like-minded goons...which for years sent her and other repugnicans to Congress. When she's corrected or ridiculed, then she'll turn to her "base" and show how we're "picking on her". This game has worked for two elections...is the third time the charm? This wench needs to go back to working at the hardware store.
