Pelosi: Compromise bill amnesty provision causes telecoms to "come out of this with a taint"
House Grants Telecom Amnesty, Expands Spying Powers

By Ryan Singel June 20, 2008 | 1:20:52 PM

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives quickly passed a bill Friday that expands the government's ability to install blanket wiretaps inside the United States. It also puts an end to the lawsuits filed against the nation's telecoms for helping the government spy on Americans without getting the necessary court orders.

The vote hands a significant victory to the White House, just months after House Democrats forced a high-stakes showdown on the same issue in February. The 293-129 vote came just 24 hours after the compromise bill was released on Thursday. Only one Republican voted against the bill, while Democrats split nearly evenly.

Speaking on behalf of the deal prior to the vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended her support, saying that a bill was necessary and that the measure rightly expanded both intelligence-gathering powers and oversight. "We took an oath to defend the country from all enemies, foreign and domestic," Pelosi said. "Good intelligence is necessary for us to know the plans of the terrorists, so we can't not have a bill."

Pelosi said she did not like the amnesty provision, saying the telecoms "come out of this with a taint." But Pelosi added that the bill's required inspector-general report was more likely to "learn the truth about the president's surveillance program" than the lawsuits would have.

36. No I think what she's trying to say is.......
That the telecoms are somewhere between being pussies and being assholes. They're afraid to face up to their crimes and that has them disgruntled. They've become tainted.

19. What I don't understand about this statement
Letting them off the hook for actions they took which went against the Constitutional rights of Americans, does nothing but tell other corporations that such actions can be excused under certain circumstances - such as a corrupt president - should the situation arise again.

The citizens of the United States gain nothing from this action and the corporations walk away secure in their power to be protected.

How is that a taint? To my simple mind it appears to be a boon.

Nancy, you owe me a new keyboard.

"We took an oath to defend the country from all enemies, foreign and domestic," Pelosi said.

Uh, no.

http://clerk.house.gov/member_info/oathoffice.html

"I, Nancy Pelosi, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

I will refrain from further comment lest I get myself banned.

37. I just called her office
and as soon as the guy knew that I wasn't happy with her, he transferred me to a message machine. I did leave a very strong message expressing my disapprovaal of how she has been voting. I used her quote above about protecting us from enemies and said something to the effect of "how about protecting our civil liberties? wasn't that part of her oath?". I told her about DU and how most of the posts about her here are very negative and some would like her to step down as speaker. She and her buddies are ruining this country. That is all.
