11 Train Cars Carrying Corn Syrup derail in Pearland

Emergency crews are cleaning up a train derailment on the north side of Pearland tonight.

The derailment happened at 5:43 p.m. today in the area of Mykawa and Knapp roads. Eleven cars carrying corn syrup went off the tracks, with seven of them turning on their sides, but no materials spilled, said Joe Faust, a spokesman with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.

No hazardous materials are involved, and no injuries occurred, Faust said. Emergency officials did not order any evacuations. No railroad crossings are blocked, but the incident has delayed train traffic in the area.

6. No hazardous materials are involved? I beg to differ.
HFCS is an extremely hazardous material, in my opinion. Its addition to more and more food products, over the years since it was first introduced, corresponds suspiciously closely to the increase of Type II Diabetes in this country. Coincidence? Not likely. Keeping it out of the house and away from my kids means reading every single label. And, sometimes, it seems like HFCS is in damn near everything!

My husband was awakened when we heard one of the "King Corn" guys talk. HE reads every label now checking for HFCS.

13. Perhaps something good will come out of the midwest flooding after all?
Kind of off topic for the train wreck thing.... but suppose that the recent weather disasters in Iowa caused the price of corn to go up to the point where the food corporations once again saw REAL sugar as a more viable option.
