Teen from Faith-Healing Family Dies at Home
Police Do Not Expect Criminal Charges to Be Filed in the Death
June 18, 2008

A 16-year-old boy whose family relies on faith rather than medical treatment has died after suffering from stomach pain and shortness of breath, police said.

Oregon parents chose prayer over medical attention for their 16-year-old son.Gladstone, Ore., police said the boy's relatives, members of the Followers of Christ Church, told police that he had refused medical treatment after becoming ill a week ago. Under state law, anyone over 14 has the right to refuse treatment.

The 16-year-old, Neil Beagley, suffered from an inflammation in his urethra, a tube leading from his bladder, which made him unable to urinate, Deputy State Medical Examiner Dr. Clifford Nelson told ABC News affiliate KATU-TV in Portland.

Beagley filled up with urine, and that eventually ruined his bladder, kidneys and heart, said Nelson. He called it "an absolutely horrible way to die."

The teen's condition could have been treated with the use of a catheter, however, Nelson said.

1. I feel for the family and all involved
And as a medic I had cases like this... one the person needed an IV, but would not accept it fearing it was blood product

You just flow with it and hope for the best and try NOT to make any judgement

They are adults, and AMA they can... period

2. And his 15-month old cousin died a few months back.
Also from something that was curable, this time with antibiotics. Her parents *have* been charged.

3. OMG, how horrible! That poor boy.
So sad. It's really hard for me to put myself into their shoes. Seems so senseless to me. :-(

4. Unless that kid was emancipated, charge his parents with manslaughter.
Fuckers.

I have no tolerance for those who abuse or endanger children.

6. As mentioned above: A cousin was also refused medical treatment
And also died ....

The parents are facing murder charges of manslaughter and criminal mistreatment ...

If a Doctor attempts a unorthodox treatment method that is not a recognized and accepted practice, and their patient dies ... They would be charged with a crime ....

WTF is wrong with people ? ..... Honestly: This is where specific tenets of a specific theology has lead time after time to disastrous results .... And yet they refuse to accept that using prayer alone to heal is SO RARE that it demands that reasonable people reconsider such a stance ....

How awful ....

7. Have you ever heard about fresh fire ministries? Minister Todd Bentley and the healing scam in FL?
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 09:50 PM by DerekJ
Well, they claim they raised people from the dead, and grew back torn limbs, a man can see now through a glass eye, and that god asks him to heal people by kicking them in the face.

Those assholes should all be fucking imprisoned.

Edited to remove a paragraph (too much info).
