With all the storms Insurance companies are busy. Our adjuster was here and totaled our roof
so now what is the next step?

do we get estimates?

Will they give us total cost or just what they think it will be worth?

this is all confusing to us

Also, we have a spot in the garage where it has started to leak in the roof and he told us he is including repair for that (YEA)

so how long does it take to roof a home?

1. My sil did his in a couple days
There's one crew in our town that has a bunch of guys on it and they just hit the roofs and get it done in hours, it seems. My sil had himself and 2 other guys I think. I am sure you should get several estimates for your own piece of mind, regardless of what the insurance company's procedures are. I hope things get back to normal for everyone soon.

2. I had a roof replaced under ideal circumstances --good weather,
full work crew etc., and it took about a day and a half. That included taking off the two layers of shingles that were already there.

Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 03:20 PM by TrogL
A friend (with the right tools and knowledge) and my son (who knew nothing but learned fast) did mine in four hours. Note, I've got a small square house with little crap on the roof.

5. You need to call your agent back and find out the process
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 03:37 PM by RedEarth
When my roof was totaled by a storm,I had to get estimates from 3 roofing companies they had approved. How long it takes depends on how busy the roofing companies are and how much work they have to do on your house.

6. Call your insurance company and find out their procedure
And yes, get estimates.

Replacing a roof will take a two or three days. Rre-shingling takes only a day or two, but replacing the roofing structure takes longer.

7. Look at your insurance policy. IF it pays "Replacement cost" of "Actual Cash Value"
It it pays ACV you may have to kick in more than your deductible. In either event make sure they account for all your loses like screens fences and AC units.

Deal with a local roofer you trust.

Make sure they include everything in the repairs and use a magnet to remove all the nails from your yard.

8. CHECK REFERENCES..
Roofers (especially after an "event") can rip you off bigtime..

We paid close to $7k for our new roof..they stripped off all the old shingles, laid new flashing & felt & it took 2 days.. our house is about 2k sq foot plus 2 car garage..We got the 30-yr shingles since we are in the sunbelt.. The crew was 3 guys on day one to strip it off & haul it away, and then 4 guys the next day to roof it..

are you in So Cal? I'd recommend these guys..
