Video of police beating of transsexual.
Video obtained by Action News 5 shows a Memphis police officer beating a suspect at 201 Poplar in an apparent case of police brutality.

"Actually he was trying to get me to come over to where he was, and I responded by telling him that wasn't my name - that my mother didn't name me a 'faggot' or a 'he-she,' so he got upset and approached me. And that's when it started," Johnson said.

1. Notice that the bald cop confronts the "suspect" only when the suspect is seated.
As soon as he stands up, the cop gets way, way back. This cop is a coward of the first order.

4. To be fair, cops are typically very cautious about confronting anybody.
I haven't seen the video, but typically police don't like taking risks in terms of being too near to somebody they're confronting, because they never know when some asshole, drunk, or nutcase is going to snap. Backing away from someone who's getting up in the middle of a confrontation would probably be standard behavior.

5. One of the benefits of being in a heavily armed society, I suppose.
Benefit might not be the right word.

2. Damn.
One good thing: Bad Cop News has this on the front page.

These guys are not afraid to release identities and follow them from job to job.

9. Most cops still have a long way to go with respect to transexuals.
Our pizza delivery woman is transgendered and happened to be delivering my order a few months ago while two cops were on the building's property.

I caught the elevator with both of them and they asked me if I "got a look at it. What was it? A man or a woman?" I answered that she is transgendered and it was brave of her to be able to keep her composure while the two of you pointed and giggled.

They didn't know how to react to me. I think they were stunned that someone actually stood up for her.
